McKenzie Baruth, left, and Jalyn Grassel, right, perform their duet interpretation during the SC/W oral interp invitational held in Woonsocket on Saturday.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, 36 oral interp performers gathered in Woonsocket for an oral interp invitational hosted by Danielle Kohlmeyer, Woonsocket’s coach, and Susan Farrell-Poncelet, Sanborn Central’s coach. The two ladies worked together to organize the event to provide another opportunity for their team members to perform in front of an audience and to also get more feedback from judges to help prepare the participants for their district contests this week.

Students from Woonsocket, Sanborn Central, James Valley Christian, Mitchell Christian and Wolsey-Wessington participated in seven different speaking/performing events, including serious reading, duet interpretation, humorous reading, non-original oratory, poetry reading, readers theatre and storytelling. They earned a rating of superior plus, superior, excellent plus or excellent from three different judges after performing three times. The average of their ratings/scores, gave them their final rating awarded to them at the end of the competition.

On Monday, Oct. 24, Terry Stulken with Midwest Center for School Safety visited Woonsocket School and gave his talk entitled “Prepare – Prevent – Respond/Wave Goodbye to Bullies” to the students about the significance of being an anti-bully. Stulken gave five age-based talks throughout the day in the Woonsocket gymnasium. The student age-based groups were kindergarten through second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, junior high, and high school. Stulken’s chat encouraged the students to be an anti-bully, to focus on lifting others up with positivity and to help someone that is struggling. He also touched on ways of dealing with being bullied and the importance of telling a trusted individual if they are struggling.

Steve Sternhagen, Call To Freedom presenter, addressed students in grades third through sixth at Sanborn Central.

Call to Freedom is an organization based in Sioux Falls. The organization provides supportive services for victims of human trafficking and exploitation.  The hour-long elementary assemblies concentrated on assessing the trustworthiness of online information and activity.  Objectives included:  the concept of intrinsic value, identification of trustworthy individuals, online safety, and personal/societal risk factors.  Students became aware of the READY concept:  to report, end dangerous communication, ask for help, don’t engage, and “your safety.”  Remember the Grandma rule: do not share information with others that you would not share with your grandma.
