Joyce Ehlers

White Lake

Joyce Ehlers, 77, White Lake, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 15 at the United Methodist Church in White Lake. Burial was in the White Lake Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Joyce was born on Aug. 27, 1936 to Tom and Hattie (Cooper) Campbell and spent her youth in the Letcher and Plankinton area. Joyce married Donald Edward Ehlers on June 10, 1953. They raised 12 children on their farm north of White Lake where they specialized in registered Black Angus.
She is survived by five sons, Wayne Ehlers of Canova, Ronnie Ehlers and Russell (Claudia) Ehlers of White Lake, John (Kim) Ehlers of Sioux Falls, David (Denise) Ehlers of Newcastle, Wyo.; four daughters, Wanda (Wayne) Hohn, Bonny (Terry) Warnke, and Fay DeBoer all of Mitchell, and Suzie Letcher of White Lake; one daughter-in-law, Jennifer Ehlers Chance of Letcher; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; sister, Patty; sons, Gary, Donnie David and James Joe; three grandchildren; and two sons-in-law, Bob Letcher and LeRoy Sperlich.

Woonsocket

Charlotte Brewer, 93, of Letcher died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at the Prairie View Care Center, Woonsocket. A prayer service was held Monday, Nov. 11 at the Basham Funeral Chapel, Woonsocket, with Rev. Garry Swagger officiating. A private family burial was on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Eventide Cemetery, Woonsocket.
Charlotte Helen (Mann/Brown) Brewer was born on Oct. 29, 1920 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Homer and Mary (Heffner) Mann. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs in 1938.
On Feb. 7, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lester Brewer in Omaha, Neb. They farmed south of Woonsocket for 50 years. She also worked for the Bill Kaye Law Office in Mitchell and the Jerry Bollinger Law Office in Woonsocket.
She loved to go on trips with her family and friends. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Letcher, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #93 of Letcher and the “If You Go I Will Go” extension club.
She is survived by two children, Judith Lee of Council Bluffs and Theodore A. Brewer and his wife, Nancy, of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; and four step-great great-grandchildren.

Nov. 5 at 11:30 a.m., Stacy Ruml, 40, of Letcher was delivering mail in his 1998 Buick Electra when the brakes went out. He was attempting to take the car home, traveling around 10-15 miles per hour, when he approached the intersection of 405th Ave. and 237th St. He felt he couldn’t make the turn, so he drove into the east ditch of 405th Ave. to slow down, thought he was going to roll so drove into the south ditch of 237th St., coming to stop next to the fence. The accident caused $2,000 damage to the car. The driver did not feel injured at the time, but was later taken to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, where it was discovered he had broken bones in his back.
On Nov. 9 just before 11 a.m., Dorothy Zoss, 69, of Letcher hit a raccoon on 413th Ave. There was an estimated $1,500 damage to her 2010 Chrysler Town & Country and no injuries.
On Nov. 10 just before 6 p.m., Theresa Maeschen, 51, of Mitchell hit a deer on SD Hwy. 37 N. with her 2010 Saturn Outlook XE. The hood of the car came unlatched after hitting the deer, she saw smoke and it caught fire while  Maeschen was in the car. A passerby attempted to put out the fire, unsuccessfully. The car was fully engulfed in flames by the time emergency personnel arrived. There was about $21,000 damage to the car and no injuries.
Nov. 10 at 7 p.m., Nathan Hegg, 35, of Mitchell hit a deer on 404th Ave. just south of 235th St. causing $1,900 damage to his 2005 GMC Sierra. No injuries.
Nov. 10 at about 10 p.m., Charles Peer, 53, of Artesian hit a deer on SD Hwy. 34 causing $4,000 damage to his 2001 Ford F250 and no injuries.
Nov. 11 at 4:20 p.m., Barbara Metzinger, 55, of Artesian was traveling east on the 414th Ave. that curves into 234th St. when her car hit a patch of packed snow. Driver was correcting the steering when the car hit dry road, sending it into the ditch and hitting the culvert in an approach and coming to rest on the other side of the approach. There was around $12,000 damage to the 2004 Chevy Trailblazer she was driving and no injuries.
Nov. 16 around 6 p.m., Greg Erwin, 57, of Woonsocket hit a deer on SD Hwy. 37. There was about $1,000 damage to his 2005 Chevy Impala and no injuries.
Nov. 17 about 5:30 p.m., Charles Kahl, 48, of Huron hit a deer on SD Hwy. 34 causing about $1,000 damage to the 2013 Dodge Ram he was driving, owned by Agrigenetics, Inc. No injuries.
