Betty Anne Steichen, 87, of Mitchell and formerly of Woonsocket, died peacefully at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls on Aug. 6, 2016.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket with Fr. Jim Friedrich officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A scripture service will be held Friday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Chapel in Woonsocket.
Betty Ann (Hamann) Steichen was born on Sept. 12, 1929 to Albert and Alice (Côte) Hamann at the family home in Franklin Township in Jerauld County.
Betty attended grade school in Lane, graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1947, and Gale Institute (business school) in Minneapolis. She returned to Woonsocket and married Bernard Steichen on Feb. 26, 1949. To their union were born three daughters, Bonnie, Mary and Suzann, and one son, Nick.
Betty worked at Steichen Service as the bookkeeper and was later employed by Sanborn County Bank in Woonsocket for 20 years. Bernard and Betty moved to Arizona in 1983, where they made their home. She was employed for five years by Associated Radiologists in their business office. After 10 years they returned to Woonsocket, but continued to spend their winters in Arizona. Her last years were spent in Woonsocket and Mitchell.
Betty was an avid softball player, bowler and golfer. She and Bernard enjoyed many camping outings with friends. She was also a member of the Woonsocket Supper Club, having enjoyed these friendships for over 60 years. She will be remembered for her quick wit, dry sense of humor and love for family and friends.
As a life-long member of St. Wilfrid Parish in Woonsocket, she was baptized, confirmed, married and now will have a funeral Mass with burial in the church cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie (Rod) Twogood, Alliance, Neb., Mary (Jim) Ball, Mesa, Ariz., Suzann (Mark) Bittner, Tempe, Ariz., and one son, Nick (Lori) Steichen, Chandler, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Bill) Molumby of Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; parents, Al and Alice; brother, Tom; sister-in-law, MaryAnn Olenick; and brother-in-law, Keith Walz.
