On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Sanborn County Food Pantry, in partnership with Feeding South Dakota, will be hosting a truckload food giveaway in Woonsocket.
An estimated 22,000 pounds of food will be distributed beginning at 5 p.m. and continuing until all of the food is gone.
There are no restrictions of eligibility except that only one box of food will be distributed per family in need.
In a state where over 105,000 individuals are food insecure, this food distribution couldn’t come at a better time. According to the most recent “Map the Meal Gap” study, 260 people are food insecure in Sanborn County alone.
“Sometimes we see people in rural locations and believe that they are all doing just fine, when in fact, they are struggling to put food on the table. As a result of the work of Feeding South Dakota, we are blessed at Sanborn County Food Pantry to be able to put food in the hands of families in a way that will help them the most,” says Diane Larson, Tom Carda and Lynn Brueske, co-chairs, Sanborn County Food Pantry.
Boxes will contain assorted frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and assorted canned and boxed items. The truck will be located at the Woonsocket Community Center. Boxes will be available at the location, but you can bring your own if you wish.
Feeding South Dakota, whose mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota, is the state’s largest charitable hunger relief organization with distribution centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City.
Last year, Feeding South Dakota secured and distributed over 12.5 million pounds of quality nutritious donated and purchased food providing 10.4 million meals to individuals in need. Feeding South Dakota is able to distribute this food through its network of over 350 charitable organizations across the state.
These organizations then provide this food to individuals who are “food insecure” through youth programs, senior centers, on-site feeding programs, emergency food pantries, after school programs, and homeless shelters.
