Hawks control their tournament destiny with big first win

“RETRO NIGHT” at “The B’s” shows the many origins of Blackhawk Nation: from the Forestburg Buccs to the Woonsocket Redmen, the Artesian Rams and Letcher Tigers to the Alpena Wildcats… and apparently the Harlem Globetrotters.

Blackhawks took control of their own destiny Thursday night with a crucial first game win over higher-seeded Wall.
The 55-41 win meant the Hawks could go home with no less than fourth place in the tournament.
SCW proved the seeding was flawed as they busted out with a 15-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Hawks shot an awesome 63 percent on 22-of-35 from the field and seven-of-20 from the line.
Myah Selland took the lead with 24 points and nine rebounds. She also rejected two shots on defense.
Wall’s attempt to contain Selland with the double-team backfired as they found she has no problem passing the ball. Selland proved her unselfishness with six out of the team’s 13 assists.
Tayla Weber had a nice night under the basket with 10 points and Kayla Olson hit seven points, including two three-pointers. Abby Doering also helped out with six points and a take-away.
Wall was led by Monica Bielmaier with 17 points and eight rebounds. Also in double figures for the Eagles was Savana Johnson with 10.
Wall hit nine out of their 19 free throw options and just 15-of-54 from the field for 28 percent. The Hawks edged the Eagles in rebounding, 35-33, and added up 19 turnovers to Wall’s nine.
The win sent the Wall Eagles into the consolation bracket, where they would come out with last place, and the Hawks into evening games and a chance at the title.
