Swan autopsy comes back

New pair to arrive this spring

The results of the recently deceased Lake Prior swan are back, and it was determined the bird did not have the flu or parasites, but did have renal-visceral gout.
Renal-visceral gout is caused by a build up of uric acid. It can cause swelling of the feet and legs, which occurred in our swan, swelling of internal organs and ultimately, kidney failure.
The disease is not caused by its food but it is very common in captive birds, especially this type of swan.
Our swan guy, Randy Sharping, was alerted of the recent tragedy, and he said he has a breeding set that he would sell us, with the trade of the swan we have left.
The City of Woonsocket recognizes the importance of the swans to the community and has given the go-ahead to make the purchase. Hopefully the new pair will give us new little cygnets to watch grow up this season.
