Woonsocket senior Brady Tiede stands six-foot-five and is a definite force as starting center for the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks basketball team. He knows how to use his height to outplay the competition and to assist his team when the shots aren’t falling.
In the Hawks 59-53 win over Corsica/Stickney Thursday, Feb. 4 in Forestburg, Tiede powered the offense with 21 points and seven rebounds, going up against Corsica-Stickney standout, Cordell Menning. Co-head coach Troy Olson noted it was a fun match-up to watch as those two big boys went at each other.
The following Saturday, Feb. 6, he scored 14 points to assist his team in handing Wolsey-Wessington their second loss of the season and ending a 13-game winning streak. In the 61-44 win, Tiede had to dig deep for extra effort, as he was battling the flu and had to rotate his minutes in the game. Even at that, Olson said, “He was a game-changer for us. He’s a tough kid and a competitor.”
For his outstanding efforts of the past week on the basketball court, Tiede was named The Daily Republic’s Athlete of the Week, an award that is voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
At this point in the season, Tiede is averaging 15.3 points per game and shooting 63 percent from the field. He leads the Blackhawks with 98 rebounds and is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game.
Tiede has played varsity ball for three years, picking up some valuable learning experience as a sophomore and then missing part of his junior season due to mononucleosis. This year he is a strong, healthy player who has played a major role in helping the Blackhawks take four wins in a row and improve to 12-3, playing against tough District 6B teams like Wolsey-Wessington (13-2) and James Valley Christian (14-3).
Congratulations, Brady, on an outstanding year and being named Athlete of the Week.
