Stanley Maakestad

Woonsocket

Maakestad 41    Stanley W. Maakestad, 91, of Woonsocket, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017, at Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 27, at the Spirit of Faith Church in Woonsocket, with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket, with military rites by American Legion Post 29, Woonsocket. Visitation at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket was Friday, May 26, from 5-7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Saturday.
Stanley was born Jan. 29, 1926, to Helmer and Edith (Slack) Maakestad. He grew up in Mitchell with four siblings and attended Mitchell High School.
Following high school, Stanley worked various jobs. During this time, he met his future wife, Lila Merkle, and they were married on March 31, 1943. He then served in the Army, arriving on Christmas Eve 1944 in Italy, and was in combat at the Battle of Po Valley.
Returning home to a son and a newborn daughter and with no jobs available, Stan unloaded a train car of coal with a wheelbarrow, working 12 hours for ten dollars, once again on Christmas Eve in 1946. In 1948, he went to work for the Rural Electric Association and retired after 37 years.
Stanley is survived by his five children: Larry (Maria) Maakestad of Ft. Collins, Colo., Lynne (Roger) Syring of Overland Park, Kan., Bruce (Luci) Maakestad of Mankato, Minn., Patti (Jim) Larson of Woonsocket, and Lori (Steven) Johnson of Elk Point; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Jean Muck; two sisters-in-law, Joan and Arlene Merkle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila; two sisters; one brother; his parents; Lila’s parents; seven brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

Janice Buckley

Mitchell

Buckley 41    Janice Marie Buckley, 63, of Mitchell, died Monday, May 22, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were Friday, May 26, at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at the Chapel.
Janice Marie Buckley was born Dec. 16, 1953, in Mitchell, to Norman and Irene (Sigmund) Hohn. She grew up near Letcher and graduated from Letcher High School in 1972.
On Nov. 11, 1978, she married Gary Lee Buckley in Mitchell. They resided in Rapid City, where Janice was employed by Scheels for over 20 years. Jan was an avid hunter and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. She holds the world record for the largest Black Bear killed by a woman with a bow and arrow.
Janice is survived by one brother, Larry (Maribeth) Hohn; one nephew, Travis Hohn; a step-nephew; a great nephew and niece; a step-great niece and nephew; and father and mother-in-law, Ray and Evelyn Buckley, all of Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gary, on Nov. 24, 2008; brother, Gerald Hohn, in July 2016; and an infant brother.

Lila Anderson

Mitchell

Anderson 41    Lila Anderson, 94, of Mitchell, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 25, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with Pastor John L. Hansen officiating. Visitation with a 7 p.m. prayer service was Wednesday, May 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial was in Butler Cemetery at rural Letcher.
Lila G. Anderson was born on Jan. 29, 1923, to Charley and Emma (Tuen) Torgerson in Yankton, and was raised on a farm near there until the spring of 1928, when they moved to a farm near Forestburg. Lila graduated from Forestburg High School in 1940.
Lila married George J. Jarabek on March 28, 1942, and they made their home in Letcher, where they remodeled and built many new homes together in the Mitchell area, the drive-in movie theater, and Twin Lakes Resort near Woonsocket, which they managed for five years. George passed away in 1971, and Lila moved to Mitchell, where she was a librarian at the Mitchell Public Library for 14 years.
Lila married Andy Anderson on Nov. 5, 1985. She and Andy enjoyed a special vacation to Florida with her brother and sister-in-law before Andy suddenly passed away in 1988.
Lila was a member of First Lutheran Church and later, a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge, Senior Citizens and their bowling league. She loved music and dancing with family and friends, including playing keyboard and harmonica, playing cards, bowling, pontoon rides around Lake Mitchell, and special times with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed her hot-air balloon ride on her 75th birthday.
Lila is survived by her children: LaVoy Gerlach of Mitchell, Judy (Tim McLaughlin) Cass of Sioux Falls, and Jerry Jarabek of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Virginia Haines of Phoenix, Ariz.;
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, George and Andy; her infant son, Ronnie; one brother, Johnny (Irene) Torgerson; two sisters, Thora (Vernon) Lien and Clara (Kenneth) Peterson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Steve and Bertha Jarabek, Roy and Emma Jacobson, Ray and Lily Jacobson, and John Haines; and nephews, Elmer Torgerson, Charles Peterson, Steve Haines and Gary Jacobson.
