An Alpena hog barn was a complete loss in a Sunday afternoon fire, to which five area fire departments responded.
None of the hogs inside the barn survived the fire, described as “fully engulfed” by the time firefighters from the nearby Alpena Department arrived. They were able to control the blaze and keep it from spreading to a connecting barn, which held 2,000 more hogs.
The barn was one of Heartland Pork’s located a mile north and a mile west of Alpena.
A 911 call was received reporting the fire about 5:15 p.m. The fire was put out by around 9 p.m.
Departments from Alpena, Woonsocket, Wessington Springs, Wolsey and Huron responded to the fire.
