Richard “Dick” Quam, 74, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at his home.
A memorial visitation was held at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls on Monday, Oct. 9.
Richard Connell Quam was born April 21, 1943, in Aberdeen to Connell Benjamin and Esther Alma (Reber) Quam. Growing up he loved farming, running track, and developed a lifelong passion for reading. He served in the 82nd Airborne and then attended South Dakota State University. Dick completed flight school in Denver and became a professional pilot. He instructed, flew lifeflights and charters, and became a corporate pilot. He retired as NorthWestern Energy chief pilot in 2005.
He had four children with his first wife, Sandy.
Dick married Lois Judy, formerly of Forestburg, on July 23, 1983, and they enjoyed traveling, bowling and golfing. Dick liked to hunt and fish with his family and friends, and especially liked to share his love of gardening and the outdoors. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lois; four children, Jeff (Jana) Quam of Sioux Falls, Christie (Mac) Case of Tucson, Ariz., Julie Buss of Hudson, Wis., and Dan (Stacy) Quam of Huron; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and half-siblings, Alene Maches and Carroll Quam.
