Arlene M. Hotchkiss, 85, of Huron and formerly of Alpena, passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at her residence in Huron with family by her side.
Her funeral service was Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Alpena Community Center with burial following in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpena. Visitation with a 7 p.m. prayer service was Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron.
Arlene was born Aug. 19, 1932, in Huron to Theodore and Ruth W. (Hilgeman) Schaffer. She attended school and graduated from high school in Alpena.
She was united in marriage to Gerald “Smiley” Hotchkiss on Aug. 27, 1950, at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. Together, they owned and operated the G&G Recreation Bar and Grill in Alpena for 20 years.
Arlene enjoyed crocheting, reading, puzzle books, and playing cards. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Alpena American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Society and United Methodist Church in Alpena.
Arlene is survived by two sons, Jeff (Pat) Hotchkiss of Woonsocket, and Larry Hotchkiss of Huron; three daughters, Rosie (Bob) Haibeck of Alpena, Katie (Les) McKinney of Sioux Falls, and Sue (Craig) Thesenvitz of Huron; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Mastin and Connie Crandall, both of Rapid City; four sisters-in-law, DeSchaffer of Brandon, Joyce (Gilbert) Hotchkiss of Alpena, Joyce Mees of Alpena, and Evonne Johnson of Sioux Falls; and one brother-in-law, Kenny Doran of Pierre.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald on Sept. 7, 2013; and six brothers, Allen, Leonard, LeRoy, Arnold, Vernon, and Lloyd Schaffer in infancy.

Lee Peterson

Holabird

Lee Peterson, 90, of Holabird, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at the Highmore Health in Highmore.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Highmore with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Highmore. Visitation with a 7 p.m. wake service was on Tuesday, Oct. 3, also at the church.
Lee Marlin Peterson was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Woonsocket, to Lewis and Mary (Martin) Peterson. When Lee was three years old, his father died, so his mother brought him and his brother, Dale, to Canning to live with her family. Lee attended school there, graduating from Canning High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Force and trained as a top turret gunner. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Lee returned home to work for Carl Graff and Erv Korkow as a ranch hand.
Lee was united in marriage to Catherine “Kay” Dancey on April 6, 1953, at St. Mary’s Cathholic Church in Highmore. Their first year of married life was spent in DeGrey. In 1954, they moved to Holabird to the home where they lived until Lee’s passing. The couple raised eight children on their ranch: Dancey, Joe, Rock, John (Jack), Julie, Colin, Ross and Steve.
Along with ranching and farming, Lee and Kay owned and operated the Centennial Cafe and Lounge in Harrold. Lee was a school board member, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Stockgrowers Association, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Holabird; his daughter, Julie (Chad) Carroll of Rapid City; his sons, Joe Peterson of Deadwood, Rock Peterson of Pierre, Colin Peterson of Martin, Ross (Chrissy) Peterson of Sturgis, and Steve (Lori) Peterson of Holabird; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Dancey and John Peterson; two brothers; and by his parents.

Clarence Ogle

Rapid City

Clarence Lowell Ogle, 65, of Rapid City, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, near Wall.
Celebration of life ceremonies were held Friday, Oct. 6, at the First Assembly of God Church in Rapid City.
Clarence was born on Nov. 2, 1951, in Huron, to the late Lowell and Katherine (Schmitgen) Ogle. He graduated from Harrold High School in 1969, and went on to attend the University of South Dakota in Springfield.
He married the late Lorna Salathe in 1974. They welcomed three children into their home – a set of twins, Brian and Kristin, and a son, Travis.
Clarence was a hard worker and was always willing to help a guy out. He spent a good part of his life rebuilding cars and took great pride in the work he did. Clarence loved going to car shows, the racetrack and talking cars. He was an active participant in his kids’ and grandkids’ sports, coaching and being a fan.
Clarence will always be remembered for his infectious laugh.
He is survived by his three children: Kristin (Mike Bickett), Travis (Jamea) and Brian (Melanie); nine grandchildren; brothers, Mike, David, Dean, Larry and Gary; father-in-law, Raymond Salathe; and mother-in-law, Mildred Salathe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Katherine Ogle; his wife, Lorna in February of 2016; and a brother, James.
