4-H Achievement Days approaching

Members of 4-H are making final preparations for their annual Sanborn County 4-H Achievement Days which will be held this weekend at the 4-H grounds in Forestburg.  Everything from livestock to fine art will be on display.  Achievement Days are an opportunity for local youth participating in 4-H to show off their hard work. The public is invited to attend the activities on Friday and Saturday.

On Thursday, 4-Hers will enter their display exhibits through interview judging.  Display entries are in a multitude of project areas including visual arts, electricity, foods, food preservation, horticulture, clothing, home environment, horticulture, hobbies and collections, safety, child development, poultry and eggs, plant science (crops) and wood science.  During interview judging, the judge will ask the 4-H member questions about their exhibit, and then explain the reasons for the ribbon awarded.  Display exhibits will be available for viewing all day Friday and Saturday in the 4-H Building.

Friday morning kicks off with the dog show at 9 am.  A livestock judging contest, from 9-11 a.m., is open to our county 4-H members as well as 4-Hers from neighboring counties. During the contest, 4-Hers will evaluate and place classes of beef, swine, sheep and goats. The contest also includes presenting oral reasons to explain their evaluation.

Friday afternoon begins with Poultry Judging at 1 p.m. Also kicking off at 1 p.m. is Rabbit Judging/Showmanship, followed by Cat Judging/Showmanship and Companion Pet Judging/Showmanship.

Friday evening holds a fun night of events, beginning with Supper-Burgers and SDSU ice cream at 5:30 p.m., followed by Ag Olympics from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and a dance at 7:30 p.m. Come on over to enjoy the fun!

Everyone is invited to a community pancake breakfast served by area businesses on Saturday morning from 7-9 a.m.  The livestock shows begin at 8:30 a.m. in the show ring. Swine will be exhibited first, followed by sheep, goats and dairy.  After a lunch break, we will have a rabbit and poultry highlight show, and then move to the beef shows. Each of the livestock shows will include a showmanship competition, and then at the conclusion of the beef show will be a round-robin showmanship contest. Senior level 4-Hers showcase their showmanship skills for showing all species in pursuit of the Grand Champion Round Robin Showmanship Award.

A delicious shredded beef sandwich meal will be served Saturday night from 6-7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. An optional treat includes a piece of pie for a free will donation.

The evening concludes with the Fashion Revue program, the Parade of Purples, and the announcement of the Pie Contest winners and live auction of the winning pies.
