On Monday, Jan. 14, Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) hosted a forum and panel discussion on the abuse of opioids in South Dakota. Woonsocket alumnus, Peyton Uttecht, was one of five DWU students who worked with Joel Reinesch, a DWU instructor in the criminal justice department and a Mitchell police officer, to bring this panel to DWU.

Camden Jost takes charge in one of the three matches he won on Saturday at the Miller/Highmore-Harrold Tournament. Jost earned fourth place in his weight class at the tournament

On Saturday, Jan. 5, the WSWWW wrestlers traveled to Miller for the Miller/Highmore-Harrold Invitational. They came home with the most individual placings and the highest team placing they have had so far this season. The team placed third out of 17 teams, and 13 wrestlers placed in the top seven of their individual weight class.

The wrestlers have their only home mat action this week on Thursday, Jan. 10, in Wessington Springs with a quadrangular that includes Howard, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, Warner/Northwestern and WSWWW. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. Their next tournament is on Saturday, Jan. 12, in Gettysburg.

Spens Schlicht puts it in for two during the varsity game against Howard on Thursday night.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawk boys’ basketball team was on the road last week with a doubleheader in Howard on Thursday, Jan. 3. Both the junior varsity and the varsity squads were successful in bringing home wins. The JV won a nail biter with a final score of 28-27. 

The Blackhawks improve to a 4-2 record, and their next game was on Tuesday, Jan. 8 in Woonsocket against the Kimball/White Lake Kiotes. Results of that game will be in next week’s Sanborn Weekly Journal. The 281 Conference Tournament will start for the boys on Saturday, Jan. 12 with their first round game against Iroquois at 5:30 p.m. Please take note of the brackets on page two for both the girls’ and boys’ tournaments.
