This year’s Sanborn Central oral interp team has increased in size considerably after having only five members last year. According to oral interp coach Susan Farrell-Poncelet, one of the factors for the growth is that she now requires her sophomore English students to participate as part of the speech requirement for her class. This has actually opened some of the students to trying something new and enjoying something that they never would have considered.
Oral Interp is a public speaking competition that some people may remember as Declam when they were in school. There are seven categories for competition in oral interp: storytelling, humorous, non-original oratory, poetry, duet, dramatic and reader’s theatre. Students choose which categories they want to compete in and their piece they want to perform. Some of the orators will choose to perform in more than one category.
