Week Two Legislative Update

By Rep. Marli Wiese

Bill proposals are beginning to fill up committee time this week.  We have heard from department heads about policy and budget requests.  Many bills filed initially deal with clean up language to make prior bills passed more consistent. So far, 81 bills have been introduced in the House and 69 in the Senate.

With the small amount of time that we have outside of committees or floor sessions, we have been meeting as whip groups and as a caucus to discuss how to find funding for teachers, providers, and state employees. There is a lot of support among legislators to do what we can to help fund those groups.

The various tourism groups from all parts of the state were in Pierre last week to bring attention to what tourism contributes to our economy.  Tourism week culminated in the governor’s award banquet where several people and businesses were honored for service to South Dakota.

The education committee heard presentations from the Board of Regents and the Department of Education. Those entities provided valuable background information for the bills we will be seeing in the coming weeks. Health & Human Services committee heard presentations on opioid abuse and nursing home issues on finding and keeping employees.

I am impressed with the work we can accomplish in Pierre when we work together. The parties have differences, but that is understandable since we all come from different backgrounds and experiences. As we move forward through the session, we cannot allow divisiveness to work against us.

More than 1,200 attendees from 35 states participated at the Western National Roundup Jan. 8-12, in Denver, Colo. The Conference, which celebrated its 100th year, is held annually in early January, coinciding with the National Western Stock Show. Due to the generous support of the Livestock Industry 4-H Trust Fund, South Dakota 4-H was able to send 26 youth who were top contestants in their respective contests at the state level for the opportunity to compete nationally.

Cortney Olinger, Aurora County 4-H member, competed in the Roundup’s Fashion Review Contest, earning this position for being selected the champion at the SD State Fair. She earned third overall in the Constructed Outfit category.

Cortney is the daughter of Clinton and Cristy Olinger and the granddaughter of Bernard and Irene Olinger and Roger and Vicki Linke.

Blackhawks perform well in 281 Tournament

Boys bring home runner-up and girls place fourth

Noah Dickson was awarded the Carr Chiropractic MVP Award for his performance in this year’s 281 Conference Tournament.

The 281 Conference Basketball Tournament started with a little hiccup due to the weather and a need for some rescheduling, but it did get to finish on time, so that was fortunate. The biggest issue with having to reschedule all of the first-round games is having referees also available. Fortunately, last Monday was a federal holiday, so that did free up a few schedules for referees, but rescheduling can still be difficult.

The first round of play on Monday, Jan. 20 saw the SCW Lady Blackhawks going in seeded second and against the seventh seed, the Iroquois/Doland Chiefs. The Lady Blackhawks handled the Chiefs quite easily with a final score of 53-27 and advancing to the semi-finals. Leading the way for the Lady Blackhawks was Teya Moody with 11 points. Kaylee White had 10 points, five steals and three assists. Trista White added nine points and eight rebounds. Brooke Doering contributed eight points, five rebounds and five steals. Trinity Boschee tossed in eight points and four rebounds.

The boys’ first round game put the second-seeded Blackhawks battling with the James Valley Christian Vikings for the second time in five days. This contest resulted in another win for the Blackhawks with a final score of 55-40. SCW was led by Noah Dickson with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Malachi Bruce helped out with 12 points, and Tater Moody pitched in 10 points. Tryce Slykhuis recorded seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
