September 2022

For her senior project this year, Kenlie Fridley decided to take on the responsibility of organizing presentations to be given to the students at her school during Farm Safety Week. As a member and an officer of the SCW FFA, Fridley had been involved in chapter discussions about what to do during farm safety week, but nothing had been decided definitively, so she came to the conclusion that it would be a great project for her to take on as a senior project.

Once she spoke to SCW FFA advisor Mr. Todd Welch and he confirmed that she could facilitate the speakers as a senior project, Fridley and Mr. Welch started contacting possible speakers to cover different farm/rural safety topics. When she had enough speakers lined up to cover all the areas they wanted to have discussed, she made up fliers to inform people of the dates, times and subject areas being covered along with the guest speaker who would be talking about each subject.

Letcher — Central Electric Cooperative recently presented Town and Kountry Kid Blue Group 4-H Club with a $1,000 Operation Round-Up® grant. The funds helped pay for a commercial-grade flagpole in Letcher.

Club Leader Janet Maeschen was instrumental in securing the grant. She said, “We really appreciate the funds. The new flagpole is a great addition to Letcher’s Main Street.”

Maeschen explained that one of the club’s goals is to promote community pride, and the new flagpole reflects that effort.

Operation Round-Up is a voluntary program in which Central Electric Cooperative members round their monthly statement up to the next whole dollar, and the extra cents support area projects. Many cooperative employees also contribute to the fund through payroll. Members and employees have invested nearly $160,000 in local community projects through Operation Round-Up since its inception in 2016.

Grants are awarded twice each year by a board of trustees, which consists of residents in Central Electric’s service area. Carla Amick of Letcher has represented Sanborn County on the board of trustees since 2016. She attended the check presentation and thanked the kids for their hard work on the project.

Todd VanWalleghen of Letcher and Merl Bechen of Mitchell serve on Central Electric’s board of directors. They also attended the check presentation to show their support for the club’s efforts.

Grant applications are once again being accepted through Nov. 1. For more information about the Operation Round-Up program, please contact Central Electric Cooperative at 1-800-477-2892 or visit www.centralec.coop/operation-round-up.

Pictured are the group of runners and their support group who either met them at the Muddy Cup or traveled with them. They made it to Woonsocket at around 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, a group of runners taking part in The 437 Project made a stop at The Muddy Cup in Woonsocket while on their way across the state. The runners joined together to create The 437 Project with the mission to bolster both physical and mental wellness and the often overlooked connection between the two.

The runners started in Belle Fourche and ran the 437 miles across the state to Sioux Falls in a relay-style format. They started on Thursday, Sept. 22 and ended on Sunday, Sept. 25. There were 12 runners in the group – six men and six women. They each ran 10-mile sections four times with long resting periods between each of their sections.

With the idea that suicide used to be such a private and personal subject that no one liked to talk about, the runners ran to raise awareness for the new accredited service for suicide prevention that has licensed counselors on staff to help anyone in a suicidal crisis. People all over the state can call or send a text to 988 to be connected to experts in suicide prevention.
