October 2022

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Blackhawks hosted the Redfield Pheasants for the first round of playoffs. The game was scoreless until the final quarter, when the Pheasants scored their only touchdown, and the Blackhawks followed suit but missed the two-point conversion and lost the game 6-7.

On offense, the six points scored for the Blackhawks came from a one-yard run by Holden Havlik. In the final seconds of the game, Havlik attempted the two-point conversion with a pass to Blake Larson, but it was caught out of bounds and didn’t count. Havlik did complete 13 passes for a total of 110 yards throughout the game.

The WWSSC Blackhawks ended their season with a record of 6-3. As Coach Kenny Huether’s first season with the Blackhawks came to a close, he had this to say about the team and the season, “I’m proud of this year’s football team for their work ethic, their attitude on a daily basis and for the success that they accomplished. This was a very good football team, and credit goes to the assistant coaches and the players for their efforts. I enjoyed every step of our season’s journey.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Lady Blackhawks hosted their annual Dig Pink Night volleyball game at Woonsocket to raise money for area families currently dealing with and undergoing cancer treatment. The event was organized by Woonsocket senior Jeslynn Moody as part of her senior project. The event consisted of a silent auction, ham and cheese sandwich feed, bake sale and a Dakotaland-sponsored chuck-a-duck contest. Between the junior varsity and varsity matches, each SCW volleyball player and coach distributed multi-colored roses and had announced someone in their lives that they were playing either in memory of or in honor of that night.

The Lady Blackhawks dressed in their pink uniforms for the special event and met the Hitchcock/Tulare Lady Patriots for a close battle with SCW losing in four sets with set scores 17-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 20-25.

On Friday, Oct. 21, the Lady Blackhawks hosted the Bridgewater-Emery Lady Huskies at Sanborn Central for their final home game of the regular season. SCW also recognized their senior players just before the varsity game that evening as it was senior night. The varsity match proved to be a nail-biter as the girls battled it out for five sets before the Lady Blackhawks were able to come back from a two set deficit and take hold of the lead and win the final set to be named the winners of the match. The set scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 15-12.

The Lady Blackhawks traveled to Plankinton to take on the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton Titans for their final match of the regular season. The post season will begin, Thursday, Nov. 1, and opponents will be determined after the final season results are decided.

A new business has opened on Woonsocket’s Dumont Avenue. Rod and Tara Weber have added The Back 9 to their business complex. It is a business with the idea of entertainment for all ages in mind. The highlighted part of the new business is the two sports simulation bays for people to rent, but there’s also video lottery and a nice-sized bar that serves pop, water and malt beverages along with five flavors of pizza. There are two levels of seating with tables and chairs and bar stools overlooking the bay areas to watch what is happening.

Both sports simulation bays have 32 games to choose from to play. Golf is one of those games, and there are 43 different golf courses for each player to choose to play. But there’s so much beyond golf. Examples of other games are bowling, soccer, baseball, football, horseshoes, bean bag toss, croquet, dodgeball, foot golf, basketball, hunting with a bow or guns, carnival games and more. For the golf games, they do have clubs for people to use, or customers can bring their own clubs in for practice.

The bays are rented by the hour for groups of four-six. Hours of operation are Monday and Thursday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday – 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday – 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday – 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday – noon to 6 p.m. Online booking for the bays is in the works, but for now, contact Megan at 605-796-4221 or send a message to The Back 9 Facebook page. There is truly something for all ages and all interests. Fun for everyone!
