On Friday, Jan. 20, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawk C-teams, made up of eighth graders, freshmen and sophomores, traveled to Wessington Springs to take on the Spartans. The girls played first and brought home a win with a score of SCW 31, WS 25.

The Blackhawk boys played next and easily beat the Spartans, 46-18.

On Monday, Jan. 23, the Blackhawk C-teams were on the road again, but this time to Alexandria to take on the Hanson Beavers and Beaverettes. First up, the Lady Blackhawks matched up against the Beaverettes. The Lady Blackhawks played well together and were able to defeat the Beaverettes, 40-32.

The SCW boys C-team followed with a strong showing against Hanson, defeating the young Beaver team, 35-15.

No other C-team games are on the schedule for the season, but if these two games are any indication, the future is bright for the SCW basketball program.

The junior high Sanborn Central/Woonsocket boys completed a successful day of basketball on Saturday, Jan. 21, in Wagner. The Blackhawks finished the day 2-1. In opening round action, the Blackhawks were paired against the best team they have seen all season. Playing Wagner, the Blackhawks came up short 23-61. In second round action, the Blackhawks defeated St. Francis, 43-11. In the final game of the afternoon, the Blackhawks played their best game of the season, defeating Mount Vernon 28-15. The Blackhawk defense was aggressive all game, holding the Titans at bay after falling to the Titans at home by six three weeks ago. Several Blackhawks contributed in both wins, and several Blackhawks found the scoring column. Up next, the JH boys will play Hitchcock-Tulare in Woonsocket on Friday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m.

On Jan. 21, the junior high SCW girls’ basketball team participated in the Kimball Tournament. The SCW girls finished the tournament with two wins and two losses. They defeated the Kimball/White Lake WiLdKats 18-8 and the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton Titans 18-10. The young Lady Blackhawks’ two losses came at the hands of a tough Ethan Rustlers team, with a score of 6-24, and the Corsica-Stickney Jaguars, with a close final score of 20-22. The JH girls play next on Thursday, Jan. 26 (tonight), in Wessington Springs at 5:15 p.m., and then they play again on Friday, Jan. 27, in Woonsocket against Hitchcock-Tulare at 6 p.m.
