The Town of Artesian Council met on February 14, 2023, in regular session at the Artesian Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Council Member Travis King called the meeting to order with Council Member Mike Salathe present. Also present were Finance Officer Molly Ebersdorfer, Tom Fridley, and Andrew and Kaleigh Zoss.

Motion by Salathe, seconded by King, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.  

Public Participation: None

Motion by Salathe, seconded by King, to approve the minutes of January 10, 2023, financial reports and vouchers as presented; motion carried.

Old Business:

Ebersdorfer gave an update on the light pole on Highway 34. Code Enforcement was discussed and updates given.

New Business:

Motion by Salathe, seconded by King, to approve the 2023 Artesian Volunteer Fireman roster and Work Comp coverage for all volunteers listed on the roster. Motion carried.  

The Board reviewed insurance coverage and amounts. Motion to approve the December 31, 2022, year end reports by Salathe, seconded by King; motion carried. 

Motion by Salathe, seconded by King, to join the South Dakota Town and Townships. Motion carried.  

Discussion was held on the Flood Plain Development Permit. No sealed bids have been received on any surplus property.

There being no further business brought before the council, motion by Salathe, seconded by King to adjourn; motion carried. Molly Ebersdorfer

Warhawk wrestlers compete at Region Tournament

Cooper Goldammer qualifies for state tournament

Cooper Goldammer earned fourth place at the Region 3B Tournament in Miller and is on his way to the state tournament this weekend. 

Saturday, Feb. 18 was a good day for Cooper Goldammer. It was the day he qualified for his first state wrestling tournament after earning fourth place in the 285-pound weight class in the Region 3B Tournament held in Miller over the weekend. Goldammer is a junior at Sanborn Central, and this is his inaugural year in the sport at the varsity level. The top four in each weight class advance to the state tournament. The three other Warhawks who advanced were Jacksen Carter, Joey Hoverson and Keegan Haider. 

The WSWWW Warhawks earned sixth place as a team after placing ten wrestlers in the top six of their individual weight class.

The Warhawks wrestled in the Huron Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 11 for their final competition of the regular season and finished with seven wrestlers earning a spot on the podium with fourth place or higher.

The South Dakota State B Wrestling Tournament will take place Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 23-25 in Rapid City.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, two local youth basketball teams from Sanborn County participated in the “For the Love of the Game” basketball tournament held at the Nordby Center in Huron.

In the sixth-grade girls “Purple Division” of the tournament, the local team was made up of Shiloh Terkildsen, Cheyann Larson, Lauren Jensen, Sawyer Larson, Ramsey Fouberg, Landree Zoss, Brooklyn Larson, and Carley Edwards and was coached by Jen Fouberg. They won all three of their games and were crowned champions. They defeated Arlington 37-5, took down Wessington Springs 20-13, and finalized their championship status against DeSmet 33-14.

In the sixth-grade boys “281 Division” of the tournament, the local team was made up of Mathias Lindgren, Kobie Schley, Trevor Johnson, Henry Baruth, Cort Stevens, Gavin Scofield, Carson Miller and Aiden Krueger and was coached by Andy Krueger. The boys won all three of their games and were named champions in their tournament. In their first game, they defeated Hitchcock/Tulare 24-23. In the second game, they won over Wessington Springs 35-20, and in their final game of the day, they beat James Valley Christian 38-23.

Next, the boys’ team has a game in Redfield on Thursday, Feb. 16. Both teams will play in a tournament held at Wessington Springs on Saturday, Feb. 25.
