The room buzzed with excitement as Sanborn Central fourth and fifth graders learned the fundamentals of electricity and electrical safety on Wednesday, March 5.

Co-ops in the Classroom is an interactive program offered to area schools by Central Electric Cooperative and its wholesale power provider, East River Electric Power Cooperative. Protons, neutrons and electrons were a major topic of discussion as students took an educational journey into the exciting world of electricity.

Tara Miller of Central Electric taught the kids about the history of electricity and electric cooperatives. Jennifer Gross of East River Electric engaged students in hands-on demonstrations.

Sometime in the past month, two vehicle fires occurred within days of each other, and there were many people who were worried that someone was on a crime spree or created a dangerous hobby. Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley was asked about the rumors, and the truth is that the fires happening so close in time was truly just a coincidence.

The first vehicle was a pickup parked in an approach a couple miles north of Woonsocket. When the owner went to get the vehicle, they found it burned up to just a frame left. It was reported that the cause for that fire was possibly electrical.

The second vehicle was a car that was driven into the ditch approximately two miles west of Woonsocket and landed rough enough that the mechanism caught fire from the impact.

Law enforcement could determine in both instances that there was no foul play and no criminal acts involved with the fires. So, all worries can be erased about the possibility of someone starting vehicles on fire on purpose for any reason.

On Saturday, March 1, the Sanborn Central powerlifting team competed in the State Powerlifting Meet held in Baltic. McKenzie Uecker earned a fifth-place medal in her weight class and was the only team member to place at the state event this year. Team members who attended the State Meet are : Clay Moody, Caleb Kneen, Ian Octavo, Landree Zoss, Uecker, Hudson Fouberg and Coach Rickey Nelsen. Zoss wasn’t allowed to compete as she is only in eighth grade, and it was a high-school event.
