Unterbrunner inducted into state Softball Hall of Fame

Charles Unterbrunner of Artesian was inducted into the South Dakota Softball Hall of Fame as an umpire during a ceremony at the Ramkota Hotel in Rapid City on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Unterbrunner umpired men’s, women’s and JO slowpitch from 1996-2016.He has served as umpire for regular state softball for 21 years, having worked 70-plus state tournaments from 1997-2016, all divisions, plus many invitational tournaments.
He also worked several men’s national tournaments at the Major and “A” levels, receiving excellent ratings at all of them.
Unterbrunner won the National Indicator Award in 2007, ASA/USA Elite Umpire award in 2008, and in 2011, 2012 and 2015 he evaluated umpires in national tournament games.
He began his career as an umpire for the SD Special Olympics and has been UIC (Umpire in Chief) of the SD Special Olympics State Tournament since 1988.
Unterbrunner farms in rural Artesian, where he lives with his wife, Mary, who is an assistant cook at the Sanborn Central School in Forestburg.
