The School Board of Sanborn Central School District 55-5 met in regular session on Monday, March 14, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanborn Central middle school computer lab with the following present: Curtis Adams, Clayton Dean, Justin Enfield, Emma Klaas, and Gary Spelbring. Others present were Superintendent Justin Siemsen, Elementary/Middle School Principal Connie Vermeulen and Business Manager Gayle Bechen.

Mr. Siemsen reported on the following:
• Legislative Update: It is looking like the proposed six percent increase to education funding will pass. There may be some final stipulations as to how the dollars are allocated, depending on how the final passed bill reads. This information will be factored into the district’s budgeting for the upcoming school year.
• The annual meeting with the district’s insurance pool will be held on Wednesday, March 23rd, in Chamberlain. Bechen and Siemsen will attend. This will also factor into the district’s budgeting for the upcoming school year.
• Senior Project work day was held on March 9, 2022, with the final project presentation day being held on Friday, March 25th.
• The district is having difficulty obtaining applicants for the recently vacated band position. The district will explore options, including leaving the position open, to fill this so that the program can continue.
• Spring activities are set to begin, with FFA CDE’s, track and golf.
Mrs. Vermeulen reported:
• Influenza A has hit the school. Thursday, 42 students were gone.
• The Middle School lock in/coronation was postponed due to the amount of sick students. It is rescheduled for Thursday, March 17. The National Guard will be facilitating Laser Tag. Other activities will take place, 3:30-6:30 p.m.
• An elementary family literacy night is scheduled for March 25 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Jean Patrick, Mitchell author, will be reading to the students. Students and parents will participate in activities and take home a packet full of literacy activities.
• The South Dakota math, ELA and science testing window has opened. A testing meeting was held with all teachers who will administer the test. The window closes May 6.
• Toby Russell, SD ICAC Task Force Commander, will be presenting an assembly to grades sixth through 12th regarding internet safety and predators on March 16 at 2:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend.
• A character assembly was held on March 3rd for grades PreK through fifth grade. The presenter combined magic with Character Counts. The students loved it. The program was funded by the Booster Club.
• End of the third quarter was March 10. Report cards will go home on March 17.
Discussion Item: If there is an election, the workers will be Judy Wormstadt, Carla Amick, Terry Moore, and Margo Edwards, alternate.

Motion by Klaas, seconded by Spelbring, all aye, to approve the resignation of Tanner Van Winkle as assistant football coach. The board thanks him for his service in this position.
Motion by Enfield, seconded by Klaas, all aye, to approve the resignation of Marci Farmer in the position of junior high science/health teacher. The board thanks her for the many years of dedicated service to the district.
Motion by Klaas, seconded by Spelbring, all aye, to approve the 2022-2023 academic calendar, adjustments may be necessary before issued.
Motion by Adams, seconded by Klaas, all aye, to acknowledge the letter received from the SCEA to enter into negotiations.
Motion by Enfield, seconded by Spelbring, all aye, to approve the certified and classified letters of intent for employment in the 2022-2023 school year with the understanding that some reassignments and letters of intent to not rehire may be necessary.

Regular Board meeting will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. in the Sanborn Central school library. The board will meet first followed by certified staff negotiations.
