Oct. 2-8 is National 4-H Week and this year’s theme is “#4HGrown.” Sanborn County is celebrating the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community and are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world.
The 4H Grow True Leaders Campaign is the first of its kind for National 4-H Council – a national, multi-platform initiative that will support the organization’s growth goals of empowering 10 million youth by 2025 (a 67 percent increase). The campaign and the event are designed to give young people across the nation a forum to put their voices into positive action and rally the nation to invest in the next generation of true leaders.
The 4-H youth development program provides “learn by doing” experiences to encourage youth to experiment, innovate and think independently. 4-H programs are offered through school-based, after-school and camp settings and within community clubs, where groups meet regularly to work on projects, perform community service and develop leadership skills. Through this unique process, youth obtain essential life skills, such as problem solving, decision making, coping and communicating.
“4-H provides positive non-school learning opportunities that are critical for the development of young people,” 4-H Leader Paula Linke said.
“As a result, 4-H youth are able to contribute and make a difference in positive ways in their homes, schools and communities throughout Sanborn County and South Dakota. 4-H provides an opportunity for youth and adults to work together while developing life skills, such as leadership, through exploring the interests of young people.”

On Sunday, Sept. 25, the TL Rangers 4-H Club met at the Woonsocket School Commons for their last meeting of this 4-H year. The meeting was hosted by the Howard family, but all families brought something to contribute to a delicious potluck meal that was enjoyed before the official meeting started.
The meeting was called to order by Club President Tyler Eddy. Camden Jost led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Clay Olinger led the 4-H pledge.  There were a few members who needed to do a presentation to fulfill their annual obligation.  Tyler and Tyson Eddy demonstrated how to make a fishing lure. Kade and Clay Olinger and Camden Jost all spoke together about how they raise and release pheasants on their farm. Finally, Mariah Jost explained how she made a decorative cross as a recycled static exhibit for Achievement Days this year.
The meeting ended with everyone getting together all the information and forms they needed to finish their 4-H books, which are also an annual requirement for 4-H members. The leaders and parents discussed some ideas for projects to work on as a club this next year. The next event for the club is Recognition Night in November.

Why Should You Join 4-H?

When I think about what 4-H has done for me throughout the time I have spent in it, the list goes on and on. It is easy to say that I would not be the same person that I am today without joining 4-H back when I was just a young eight-year-old. Some of my clearest memories have been from participating in various 4-H events and activities.
From speaking in front of others, to showing sheep at the State Fair, to cooking a meal and knowing just how healthy all the ingredients are, I have grown so much as a 4-Her. These activities have taught me hard work and dedication in order to have success at the end of my project.
One of my favorite parts of 4-H, though, is helping and mentoring the younger members. 4-H is all about making the world a better place to live in, and one of my favorite ways to do that is through helping the younger members who look up to you.
The competitions and shows are fun and exciting, but the most important thing to me about 4-H isn’t marked with a ribbon. The best part of this organization is the people. The other families and kids in your club will become almost family-like and will be there to help with anything you need. I know for a fact I would not have been successful through my career if I had not had the amazing, caring people to help me out along the way. So if you join 4-H, you are not only joining for the learning aspect, but you are also joining if for the one-of-a-kind relationship aspect.
Next week, Oct. 2-8, is National 4-H Week, and the theme is #4HGROWN. 4-H has helped me grow in many areas, including responsibility, teamwork, caring, confidence, public speaking and leadership. I encourage you to join 4-H! Contact our 4-H office at 605-796-4380 for more information, or just visit with any 4-H member in Sanborn County!
