4-H

Henry Feistner was able to ride his new horse, Olive, for the very first time at the Fun Horse Show on Oct. 16. Henry and Olive ended up winning all of the speed events in the Beginner category.

A 4-H Fun Horse Show was held on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the 4-H Grounds in Forestburg with eleven counties represented. Fifty-three 4-Hers started the new 4-H year by participating in their annual horse safety training presented by Eric Kobernusz of Mt. Vernon.

Following the training, 29 4-Hers joined in the fun and participated in eight different events throughout the afternoon. Donna Fink of Plankinton was given the task of judging the many events.  Ribbons were awarded to the top six finishers in each class of beginner, junior and senior participants. Points were totaled and Grand Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons and prizes were awarded to overall beginner, junior and senior participants.

The theme for the National 4-H Week Celebration from Oct. 2-8 was #Opportunity 4 All, which highlights how 4-H offers opportunity for youth to find their passion and explore learning about that passion through hands-on learning experiences. Sanborn County 4-H observed National 4-H Week by showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlighted the remarkable local 4-Hers who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them.  The positive environment provided by 4-H mentors ensures that kids are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career.

Sanborn County 4-H members celebrated the week with various activities. In Woonsocket, 4-H members led an all-school assembly to share information about the opportunities through various project areas.  Some of the staff were invited to learn more about poultry showmanship under the guidance of 4-H member Bailey Feistner. At both Woonsocket and Sanborn Central Schools, many students wore green in support of 4-H and were rewarded with green candy! Look for Letters to the Editor sharing the opportunities that 4-H has given our kids.

As the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, 4-H cultivates confident kids who tackle the issues that matter most in their communities right now. Letcher — Central Electric Cooperative recently presented Town and Kountry Kid Blue Group 4-H Club with a $1,000 Operation Round-Up® grant. The funds helped pay for a commercial-grade flagpole in Letcher.

Club Leader Janet Maeschen was instrumental in securing the grant. She said, “We really appreciate the funds. The new flagpole is a great addition to Letcher’s Main Street.”

Maeschen explained that one of the club’s goals is to promote community pride, and the new flagpole reflects that effort.

Operation Round-Up is a voluntary program in which Central Electric Cooperative members round their monthly statement up to the next whole dollar, and the extra cents support area projects. Many cooperative employees also contribute to the fund through payroll. Members and employees have invested nearly $160,000 in local community projects through Operation Round-Up since its inception in 2016.

Grants are awarded twice each year by a board of trustees, which consists of residents in Central Electric’s service area. Carla Amick of Letcher has represented Sanborn County on the board of trustees since 2016. She attended the check presentation and thanked the kids for their hard work on the project.

Todd VanWalleghen of Letcher and Merl Bechen of Mitchell serve on Central Electric’s board of directors. They also attended the check presentation to show their support for the club’s efforts.

Grant applications are once again being accepted through Nov. 1. For more information about the Operation Round-Up program, please contact Central Electric Cooperative at 1-800-477-2892 or visit www.centralec.coop/operation-round-up.
