4-H

The theme for the National 4-H Week Celebration from Oct. 2-8 was #Opportunity 4 All, which highlights how 4-H offers opportunity for youth to find their passion and explore learning about that passion through hands-on learning experiences. Sanborn County 4-H observed National 4-H Week by showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlighted the remarkable local 4-Hers who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them.  The positive environment provided by 4-H mentors ensures that kids are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career.

Sanborn County 4-H members celebrated the week with various activities. In Woonsocket, 4-H members led an all-school assembly to share information about the opportunities through various project areas.  Some of the staff were invited to learn more about poultry showmanship under the guidance of 4-H member Bailey Feistner. At both Woonsocket and Sanborn Central Schools, many students wore green in support of 4-H and were rewarded with green candy! Look for Letters to the Editor sharing the opportunities that 4-H has given our kids.

As the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, 4-H cultivates confident kids who tackle the issues that matter most in their communities right now. More information about 4-H can be found on the Sanborn County 4-H website sanborncounty4h.com, or you may call or email the 4-H office at 605.796.4380 or sanborn.county@sdstate.edu.

Letcher — Central Electric Cooperative recently presented Town and Kountry Kid Blue Group 4-H Club with a $1,000 Operation Round-Up® grant. The funds helped pay for a commercial-grade flagpole in Letcher.

Club Leader Janet Maeschen was instrumental in securing the grant. She said, “We really appreciate the funds. The new flagpole is a great addition to Letcher’s Main Street.”

Maeschen explained that one of the club’s goals is to promote community pride, and the new flagpole reflects that effort.

Operation Round-Up is a voluntary program in which Central Electric Cooperative members round their monthly statement up to the next whole dollar, and the extra cents support area projects. Many cooperative employees also contribute to the fund through payroll. Members and employees have invested nearly $160,000 in local community projects through Operation Round-Up since its inception in 2016.

Grants are awarded twice each year by a board of trustees, which consists of residents in Central Electric’s service area. Carla Amick of Letcher has represented Sanborn County on the board of trustees since 2016. She attended the check presentation and thanked the kids for their hard work on the project.

Todd VanWalleghen of Letcher and Merl Bechen of Mitchell serve on Central Electric’s board of directors. They also attended the check presentation to show their support for the club’s efforts.

Grant applications are once again being accepted through Nov. 1. For more information about the Operation Round-Up program, please contact Central Electric Cooperative at 1-800-477-2892 or visit www.centralec.coop/operation-round-up.

Locals perform well at 2022 South Dakota State Fair

By Sherryl Rankin, SDSU Extension Office for Sanborn County

PICTURED IS Bailey Feistner and her rooster, who earned Grand Champion Poultry at the South Dakota State Fair.

The 2022 South Dakota State Fair is now behind us, and Sanborn County 4-Hers can breathe a sigh of relief as all their hard work has paid off.  The successes received is so much more than the ribbons and awards listed below.  It is reflected in their determination to do the very best  and the knowledge gained in completing their projects.  Sanborn County can be very proud of the 4-Hers who have represented us.  Their hard work was evident to all.

This year, the amount of projects a 4-H member was allowed to exhibit varied within each project area.  In animals, they could show three Beef (Breeding and Market), four Companion Animal, four Dairy Cattle, four Dairy Goats, four Meat Goats (Breeding and Market Meat), four Poultry, four Rabbit, four Sheep (Breeding and Market) and four Swine (Breeding and Market). For their static exhibits, they were allowed to show up to six display exhibits.
