4-H

Learning how to prepare food and meals is an absolute necessity for every individual. The Special Foods Contest is a great way for 4-Hers to address this challenge and to grow in their abilities. All thirteen of the participants at the contest held on July 7 were required to use correct measuring, mixing and preparation techniques. Along with proper food safety, the 4-Hers had to answer questions about the five food groups, six basic nutrients, and the vitamins and minerals present in the recipe they prepared. Youth are allowed a total of 90 minutes to prepare the recipe, complete a place setting and interview with the nutrition judge.

Judging the contest this year were Margo Edwards and Maria Feldhaus. Receiving purple ribbons for their special dishes were: Kaylee Adams – Banana Muffins, Miley Adams – Chicken Parmesan Bake, Whitney Adams – Strawberry Banana Smoothie, Hope Baysinger – Pumpkin Muffins, Shay Bechen – Vegetable Goulash, Sury Bechen – No-Bake Energy Bites, Hudson Fouberg – Mexican Meat Cups, Ramsey Fouberg – Ramsey’s Favorite Egg Bake, Victoria Hoffman – Tator Tot Hotdish, Trevor Johnson – Orange Dreamsicle Smoothie, Brooklyn Larson – Terrific Taco Bake, Elisha Schultz – Chicken Scampi Pasta, and Isaiah Schultz – Creamy Bacon Pasta.
