4-H

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Red Crew 4-H Club met on Nov. 12 at the Woonsocket Community Center.

Prior to the meeting, club members participated in a number of activities.  American Education Week gifts and cards for the teachers and staff were prepared. Sponsor thank you’s were signed, and Thanksgiving cards with greetings to our elderly friends were written. A kitchen appliance identification activity was completed. Recreation Officer Trevor led a game of “Stand Up/Sit Down.” Snacks were served by the Hansen family and Leader Paula Linke.

The meeting was called to order by Acting President Dilyn Brooks.  The Flag Pledge was led by Ty Burkel, and the 4-H Pledge was led by Danielle Brooks. 

Roll call was led by Avery Miller with the topic, “My Favorite Food for Thanksgiving” which was answered by 25 members. The club welcomed new 4-H members from the Hansen family: Mary Catherine, Samuel, Paul and Cecilia.

A health and safety report was given by George on the importance of drinking water and by Ty on how to wash your hands well.

The secretary’s report was read by Co-Secretary Emily Ohlrogge and approved as read. The treasurer’s report was given by Co-Treasurer Bailey Feistner and approved as read.

A report on the Recognition Event was given by Lane Burkel and Gavin Scofield.  

A public presentation drawing was held to award two $25 cash prizes to members who got their talk or demonstration done early. Any 4-H member who completed a talk or demonstration at a club meeting by the end of March, or did a county level public presentation, was entered in the drawing to win one of two $25 cash prizes. The winners were Alex Anderson and Avery Miller.

2020-2021 Club Officers were selected as follows: Co-President – Xavier Baysinger and Megan Linke, Co-Vice President – Emily Ohlrogge and Dilyn Brooks, Co-Secretary – Bailey Feistner and Acaiya Schultz, Co-Treasurer – Lane Burkel and Mary Catherine Hansen, Co-Recreation – Avery Miller and Trevor Johnson, Co-Character – Hope Baysinger and Isaiah Schultz, and Co-Health/Safety – Ty Burkel and George Broer.  

Members talked about setting individual goals and working on awards. They are planning a project day and a fun day.

The club discussed working with and promoting a winter coat collection drive with the SCW FFA Chapter. There are collection boxes at the Courthouse and at Woony Foods, as well as at the schools. The club is asking for donations of new or gently used coats that will be given to kids in need at the school. 

For the Christmas Caring project, club members want to do something for the nursing home residents, and discussed various options including suggestions of a three wishes project, giving socks, and doing a live or recorded Zoom call with the residents. A committee was appointed to decide on a project and organize a plan.  Committee members are Emily, Dilyn, Trevor, Mary Catherine, Samuel, Lane and Kolby Lindsey.

The next 4-H meeting will be scheduled in December.

Alexis Kelly was chosen by the shooting sports coaches to receive the 2020 Shooting Sports Sportsman of the Year Award.

As the 2019-2020 4-H year comes to an end and a new one begins, Sanborn County 4-H annually holds two events to acknowledge the 4-Hers many achievements, the Recognition Event and Shooting Sports Award Night. Due to the current COVID situation, it was decided to combine the two events and make some changes this year in honoring the youth. 4-Hers were invited to the 4-H Building in Forestburg on Sunday, Nov. 8, at staggered times starting at 4 p.m. to pick up their awards, record books and premium money. A green backdrop was set up allowing the 4-Hers to take pictures with their awards.

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Red Crew 4-H Club met on Oct. 18 at the Woonsocket Community Center.

Prior to the meeting, supper was served by the Senska family and Lisa Snedeker. Club members participated in a Horticulture/crops ID activity.

The meeting was called to order by Co-Vice President Xavier Baysinger.  The Flag Pledge was led by Emmitt Feistner, and the 4-H Pledge was led by Chaz Larson. 

Roll call was led by Shiloh Senska with the topic, “If Someone Looked Under My Bed, What Would They Find?” which was answered by 15 members.  

The secretary’s report was read by Luke Larson and approved as presented. The treasurer’s report was given by Co-Treasurer Bailey Feistner. It was moved by Sutton Senska, seconded by Shiloh, to approve the report as presented.  

Hope Baysinger reported on her participation in the Horse Safety/Fun Day. Emmitt told the group about showing his pigs at Western Junior Livestock Show. Sutton talked about celebrating National 4-H Week.  Lane Burkel and Shiloh reported on setting barrels.  

Enrollment for the new 4-H year will open on Nov. 1.  

The club reviewed their 2019-20 club goals. After discussion, it was moved by Lane, seconded by Hope, to set the following club goals for 2020-21:

1) Try a new project;

2) Attend at least four meetings; 

3) Everyone turn in their record book on time;

4) Each 4-H member participates in an least one community service project.

The club also talked about award planning.

Election of officers will be done at the November meeting.

Club members discussed plans for their Recognition Event. It will be Nov. 8 at the 4-H Building beginning at 4 p.m. Due to social distancing guidelines, there will be assigned time slots to come in small groups to receive their awards, record books and premium money from their leaders. Members will have the option for pictures with the 4-H backdrop.

The group discussed options, and with a motion by Luke, seconded by Henry Feistner, they decided on a plan for celebrating American Education Week. 

They are going to plan for a project day and/or a fun day over Christmas break. Options will be worked on.

Ty Burkel gave a health/safety presentation about first aid for a cut and how he put what he had learned into action with his brother.

Hope presented a character activity called Tower of Trust, where she demonstrated how you build trust with your parents and others, and how easily that tower of trust can be broken down.

The next 4-H meeting will be scheduled in November.
