Around the County

This is a picture of the low-flying aircraft seen in areas of Sanborn County recently.

The Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls in the past few weeks about a low-flying aircraft in Sanborn County skies. According to reports from some of the county’s residents, there has been an aircraft flying at very low altitudes south of Artesian and north of Woonsocket, which has raised a few concerns to people living in the areas where they have been spotted. Thanks to the Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office, all concerns can be quashed and eliminated.

Through an investigation with the South Dakota National Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration, Deputy Josh Starzman found that, for the past 30 plus years, the area a few miles north of Mitchell going north through Sanborn County has been a designated low-level military training route (MTR). Because it is a military route, the emphasis is on low-altitude training and the lowest threshold for that is 500 feet, so it can be alarming to see something flying that low in this area that isn’t spraying crops.

Sophie Kelly, a seventh grader at Sanborn Central and a junior member of the Letcher American Legion Auxiliary, has organized a community service project collecting tennis shoes for veterans. She got the idea from her grandmother, Faye Blindauer, who is also a member of the Letcher American Legion Auxilary and Letcher Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml, and it turns out the idea will help more than most might think.

The project, itself, is collecting shoes for veterans to use, but the organization that accepts the shoes will pay for every pair collected, and that money is going back to the Letcher Auxiliary to help fund other projects they put together to help even more veterans. In addition, Kelly has organized the project to be used as a community service project for 4-H, so she is fulfilling another obligation for a worthy organization.

Kelly is hoping that people from all over Sanborn County will take the time to go through their families’ closets and bring used tennis shoes to be donated at one of the drop-off places, which include CorTrust Bank at both Artesian and Letcher, Letcher Community Center, Letcher Community Church, Sanborn Central School and Woonsocket School. She will be accepting donations now until the middle of May when the school year ends.

Last week was cold, blustery and full of snow with Winter Storm Olive putting things to a halt all over South Dakota on Wednesday and Thursday. The snow started Tuesday and continued through Wednesday. The wind picked up and made for difficult driving conditions all day Wednesday and part of Thursday. Schools were closed or practicing E-learning to keep from making up so many days. Thursday afternoon was spent cleaning out driveways, roads, walkways and parking lots, so life could get back to normal on Friday. To give townships and families extra time to clear roads and driveways, Sanborn Central continued with E-learning on Friday, but the last basketball game of the regular season was able to take place that night, so normalcy was found quickly.
