Around the County

There was a sea of light blue in the stands at the Blackhawks’ doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 14, at Sanborn Central. People were drawn to the gym, not only to support the Blackhawks, but also to show support both physically and financially for young Jalyn Bender, a second grader at Sanborn Central, who is recovering from surgery that removed a benign tumor from around her brain stem.

Jalyn’s mother, Jenica (Pearson) Bender is an alumnus of Sanborn Central High School, and she has worked at the Woonsocket Healthcare Center as a CMA. So, the employees of the clinic took t-shirt orders to raise funds to help with Jalyn’s medical expenses, and everyone who bought a shirt was asked to wear them to the games Monday night to show their support for Jalyn and her family. The t-shirt sales raised over $5,000 for the family.

In addition, on the night of the ball games, organizers put together a chili and soup feed to raise funds for the Bender family. There was also a bake sale, a few things raffled off and a chuck-a-duck contest, with all the proceeds going to Jalyn and her family. With all the activities at the ball games that night, they made $5,816.02 to help the family.

Recently, local youth attended the Western National Roundup in Denver, Colo., Jan. 5-9. The 4-H Livestock Industry Trust Fund sponsored the trip for: Livestock Judging, Livestock Quiz Bowl, Horse Judging, Horse Quiz Bowl, Hippology, Horse Demonstration, and Horse Public Speaking. Youth were selected from competing in the various South Dakota 4-H Youth-In-Action State Events.

Bailey Feistner of Sanborn County 4-H represented South Dakota in Horse Public Speaking and was coached by Jennifer Feistner.

In Horse Judging, team members included: Callie Hammerstrom, Turner County; Abigail Kolousek, Buffalo/Jerauld County; Keeleigh Reis-Elwood, Lyman County; and Delaney Zoss, Sanborn County. They were coached by Steve Zoss, Audra Scheel, April Reis and Eric Kobernusz.

The group had a memorable trip down as they were stuck in Rapid City for several hours due to road closures in Wyoming and Colorado due to winter weather. However, youth were ready to compete upon arrival.

In horse public speaking, Bailey Feistner placed third. In the horse judging contest, South Dakota 4-H placed seventh as a team overall, and individually they placed well:

• Delaney Zoss – 17th (Overall Individual), 14th (Individual Halter), 18th (Individual Reasons);

• Keeleigh Reis-Elwood  – 18th (Individual Halter), 20th (Individual Reasons);

• Abigail Kolousek – 20th (Individual Halter).

Sanborn County farmer Henry Linke recently directed a $2,500 America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation, sponsored by Bayer Fund, to Sanborn County 4-H, specifically to be used towards the 4-H Building Addition Project.

Plans are underway to double the size of the 4-H building with a 100’ x 60’ addition. A fundraising drive continues with a kickoff event this Saturday, Feb., 19 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg that includes a free-will donation prime-rib supper and both a silent auction and live auction.

The expansion plans are to better accommodate activities including the 4-H shooting sports program that meets on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday nights from January-April, the annual Achievement Days, and many other 4-H and community activities. Sanborn County has a very active 4-H program that has outgrown the current 4-H Building. The building is also used for community and school activities throughout the year including meetings and workshops, graduation receptions, showers, family reunions and get-togethers, funerals and the Forestburg alumni reunion. Both Sanborn Central and Woonsocket Schools have indicated that there is a need for additional building space for school plays, FFA activities, marching band practice, cheerleading practice, and much more that could take pressure off the school gym and support various activities. There is also potential for the building to be used for larger social events with increased space.
