Around the County

On Saturday, March 19, at around 5:40 p.m., the Sanborn County Sheriff’s office was called to an accident that occurred at the corner of County Highway 224, known as the Alpena road, and South Dakota Highway 37. Natalia Morelos-Gutierrez of Huron was on her way home from work and was stopped at the intersection in her 2015 Mazda Grand Terrain. Josepha Rik Rik of Huron was on her way to work in her 2010 Dodge Avenger and struck Morelos-Gutierrez. There were no injuries, but both cars were totaled. Rik Rik was cited for careless driving.

Then, at around 8:50 p.m. the same night, the Sheriff’s Office was called out to a car/deer collision, with, again no injuries, other than to the deer, and there was no chance of resuscitation. The car was damaged, but still drivable.

Jenica BENDER helps her daughter, Jalyn, pull out a card for the 50/50 drawing.

When Brenda Schmit, Lori Dean, Amy Olson and Sherri Stekl first learned of little Jalyn Bender’s detected brain mass, it was while on vacation with her grandparents, Tim and Julie Pearson, along with several couples on their annual vacation south of the border. According to members of the vacationing clan, “Our entire group was in shock. Tim and Julie flew home early and the rest of us were in a daze.”

It didn’t take long for the four ladies to agree that after five years, it was unfortunately time for another benefit. The group had organized a similar event almost five years to the date earlier for Paisley King and before that, Tanna Kingsbury. As expected, as soon as word got out that a benefit bean bag tournament was being scheduled at the Stekl Shop, the offers to help started flying in.

“Everyone wants to help. They want to do something but aren’t sure what, and having a benefit like this gives everyone a chance to make a difference. We told the family, don’t think of this as charity. Think of it as a way to allow people to help because that’s what they want to do.”

There was a sea of light blue in the stands at the Blackhawks’ doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 14, at Sanborn Central. People were drawn to the gym, not only to support the Blackhawks, but also to show support both physically and financially for young Jalyn Bender, a second grader at Sanborn Central, who is recovering from surgery that removed a benign tumor from around her brain stem.

Jalyn’s mother, Jenica (Pearson) Bender is an alumnus of Sanborn Central High School, and she has worked at the Woonsocket Healthcare Center as a CMA. So, the employees of the clinic took t-shirt orders to raise funds to help with Jalyn’s medical expenses, and everyone who bought a shirt was asked to wear them to the games Monday night to show their support for Jalyn and her family. The t-shirt sales raised over $5,000 for the family.

In addition, on the night of the ball games, organizers put together a chili and soup feed to raise funds for the Bender family. There was also a bake sale, a few things raffled off and a chuck-a-duck contest, with all the proceeds going to Jalyn and her family. With all the activities at the ball games that night, they made $5,816.02 to help the family.
