Artesian

On April 7, 1970, a fire, aided by 40- to 50-mile-an-hour winds, destroyed the Artesian business district. It was reported that the fire began just before 2:30 p.m. in the upper floor of Noell’s Department Store. The fire quickly spread, burning buildings and property on both sides of more than two blocks of main street. The fire made it to Highway 34, burned the service station, the two grain elevators and a large storage bin.

Fire departments from Artesian, Woonsocket, Letcher, Carthage, Howard and Mitchell worked together to fight the flames through the afternoon and the evening. A fire-watch was organized that included Artesian residents to monitor and prevent the fire from flaming up again.

The buildings destroyed or badly damaged included the former hardware building, theatre, recreation hall, bar, barbershop, café, American Legion building, launderette and an adjoining building. The homes of William Boocks and Ray Cunningham were also ruined by the fire. Buildings that were spared included the Livestock State Bank and the Artesian Improvement Co. building that housed the post office, the Northern States Power Co. offices and Milliken Funeral Chapel.

Members from the Artesian and Town and Country Fire Departments spent Saturday improving their skills. The goal of the day’s training  was to practice new fire attack techniques and familiarize members with new equipment. Crews did several interior fire attack scenarios along with search and rescue of a trapped occupant. The afternoon had departments doing rapid exterior fire attacks on large fires. These live fire sessions allow crews to better train for realistic events and better serve the community.

In high school, Katie is involved in FFA (officer), student council (officer), National Honor Society, band, chorus, oral interpretation, drama, yearbook, volleyball, golf, basketball, and more. She is also a 4-H member and officer. She has won many awards and honors in all of these organizations and activities. In her community, she has organized and was the keynote speaker at the Veteran’s Day program, and has helped and organized various FFA, 4-H, and community activities. Katie plans to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. In her essay she states, “I believe every person should know more about where their food comes from and how it is produced. I can play one more advantageous role in promoting our western heritage – I can serve as an advocate for agriculture with my patients and clients in the community and base my dietary and health recommendations on scientific facts and not the propaganda that seems to be so prominent on social media.”
