Letcher

Pictured above are some of the crowd gathered in the Letcher Community Center for the silent auction along with several of the volunteers who worked to organize the entire event to raise funds to help John Baysinger with his cancer treatments.

In December, John Baysinger of Woonsocket was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer with spots on his liver. He has been taking chemo and has finished that treatment for the time being. He is currently in Rochester at the Mayo Clinic to meet with surgeons for treating both his colon and his liver.

Because of the expenses that incur with such a diagnosis and everything that goes into treating it, some friends of John put together a benefit for him to help pay for some of the out-of-pocket expenses that go along with the treatments and follow-up.

The benefit was held in Letcher on Sunday, March 14, and included a fish fry and chili feed, a silent auction, a bake sale and a live auction. It also included a few raffle boards for donated guns, cement and a 70-quart Big Frig cooler with the Baysinger Honey Farms logo on the top of it. According to one of the benefit organizers, the benefit on Sunday raised about $25,000. With the money raised from the raffle boards that had already been taking place prior to the event and the private donations deposited into the account setup at First National Bank, there has been a little over $40,000 raised for John to help in his fight against cancer.

The outpouring of compassion and generosity from the communities in Sanborn County has been nothing short of amazing and inspiring. It has been heard many times, over the past couple of months especially, of how wonderful it is to live in a small town, and the continued support for those who find themselves in need of love and help is definitely proof of that. The way that the small communities of Sanborn County have worked together is truly remarkable and second to none.

Despite suffering from a knee injury that brought her basketball season to an end for this year, Myah Selland had been performing so well prior that she was named Summit League Player of the Year for this season. Her stats definitely prove how she was chosen for the honor as she averaged 19.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. She had 19 games where she scored more than 15 points, and she had a 52.4 field-goal percentage for the Jackrabbits against Summit League opponents.

Selland is in her fourth season at South Dakota State University. She has also been awarded as a member of the Summit League All-Newcomer Team in her first season and honorable mention for the All-Summit League in her second season. She was named Summit League Player of the Week in January of 2019. For the entire time she has been playing college basketball, she has been named to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll, and she has been on the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence for the past two seasons.

Selland is a 2017 graduate of Sanborn Central High School. She is an exercise science major and is currently recuperating from knee surgery to repair damage done to her knee in a game a few weeks ago. She will work on recovery all summer and is planning to be back on the court for the Jackrabbits next season as long as all goes well.

On the weekend of Feb. 12 and 13, the Korkow Rodeo hosted their Fourth Annual Broncs and Bulls competition. Layton Zoss and Tanner Christian both competed in the Ride ‘Em Rank mini bull competition on Saturday night. Zoss won his age division and the event. He was awarded a belt buckle and a $285 cash prize for his championship win.

Mason Moody competed both Friday and Saturday nights. He made the short go on Friday night, but didn’t complete anything on Saturday night. Lawson Zoss competed in his first bull riding competition during the event. According to his mother, he didn’t make the whistle, but he sure had fun.

The Zoss boys are sons of Charlie and Christy Zoss of rural Forestburg. Christian is the son of Kristi Weber and Stuart Christian of Woonsocket, and Moody is the son of Perry and Tracy Moody of rural Letcher.
