The CorTrust Bank ALM (Artesian, Letcher, Mt. Vernon) Community Foundation Board of Directors recently awarded the following grants: Mt. Vernon Fire Department for $1,780 for two sets of new safety gear; and Sanborn Central School District for $1,500 for a new commercial grade treadmill for the cardio room.

The CorTrust Bank ALM Community Foundation is an organization formed to attract and distribute gifts of capital for community betterment. It was initially funded by CorTrust Bank with a match from the South Dakota Community Foundation for the benefit of the Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon communities. The first grants were awarded in August 2000.  Grant applications are considered based on several factors, including the potential benefit of the proposed project to the particular population to be served and to the community as a whole.  The CorTrust Bank ALM Community Foundation has awarded over $142,000 since its inception.

The CorTrust Bank ALM Community Foundation encourages and welcomes donations, memorial gifts, bequests and gifts of capital. The income generated from investment of these funds is then made available for grants. Donors may restrict their gifts to certain types of grants or to certain communities, or they may designate them as unrestricted.

The CorTrust Bank ALM Community Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors that consists of people from the Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon communities, as well as CorTrust Bank. The current members of the Board of Directors are Jeff Ebersdorfer from Artesian, Gibi Page from Fedora, Lori Kluth and Cheryl Hohbach from Mt. Vernon, Sherri Stekl and Janet Maeschen from Letcher, and Jeff Tiede, Barb Metzinger, Brad Haiar and Don Threadgold from CorTrust Bank. The Board meets twice a year to review grant applications. The next grant application deadline is Aug. 15. Applications and more information can be obtained from the CorTrust Banks in Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon, or at www.sdcommunityfoundation.org/almfoundation.

Tater Moody and Cayden Slykhuis teamed up as champions in the team roping competition on Sunday at the Heartland 4-H Rodeo in Huron.

Sanborn County was represented well at the Heartland 4-H Rodeo in Huron this past weekend. Several kids placed in their events, and some in more than one. The top three places in each event advanced to the State 4-H Rodeo to be held in Ft. Pierre.

On Saturday, Trey Moody earned a second-place finish in the flag race, a third-place finish in breakaway and a fourth-place finish in goat tying. Mason Moody and his team roping partner earned second place in team roping.

On Sunday, Cayden Slykhuis and Tater Moody won the championship in the team roping competition. Tanner Christian earned third place in the junior boys cattle riding competition, and Teya Moody placed sixth in barrell racing.

Aubrey Moody had a good weekend placing in multiple events. Layton and Landree Zoss and Hudson and Ramsey Fouberg all competed and had some good runs.

Delaney Zoss was crowned Heartland Jr. Ambassador for the entire event. Bailey Feistner and Avery Miller both also competed in the Ambassador contest, as well.

Mason Moody not only competed in the rodeo; he also provided the bulls for the bull riding competition. He was not able to compete in the bull riding, yet, but plans to as the season progresses.

The past weekend found Mason Moody and Madi Moody both competing at the Eastern Dakota 4-H Rodeo in Watertown. The Moodys have been busy already competing and preparing for competition, as their mother, Tracy, informed the Journal that Mason actually qualified and competed in the State High School Rodeo Finals earlier; however, this is their first 4-H rodeo competition for this year.

Their results for the rodeo in Watertown over the weekend are, on Saturday, Mason placed second in team roping. On Sunday, Mason placed fifth in team roping, and Madi placed second in goat tying, third in pole bending and seventh in barrel racing.

According to Tracy, it is very exciting to have Madi able to compete in the goat tying competition again after she had to sit out last year due to a knee injury. Also, stay tuned for future results as the Moodys continue to compete this summer, and Mason will start bull riding next week.

Other local kids who also participated in the Eastern Dakota 4-H Rodeo in Watertown were Hudson Fouberg, Ramsey Fouberg, Layton Zoss and Landree Zoss, all from Sanborn Central and Tanner Christian from Woonsocket. No placings were reported for these students, but Hudson Fouberg was voted Miss Congeniality in the Jr. Queen Contest for the weekend’s event.
