Letcher

The Letcher Community Church enjoyed an evening with fun-filled activities on Wednesday, July 12. The evening started with a kickball game with adults and children participating.  Pastor Tim was the designated pitcher for the evening. Spectators enjoyed the excitement of the game. Then, fellowship was enjoyed in the church basement while eating pizza, cookies, and ice cream cones. The pizza was supplied by Jerilyn Moody through a Thrivent grant.

On Wednesday, July 12, Myah Selland was honored at the Gatorade Player of the Year Awards ceremony for her work with a new non-profit organization, Her Turn, which she co-founded with SDSU teammate, Tori Nelson. While at the awards ceremony, the two ladies proudly accepted the 2023 Community Grant Award of $25,000 to help continue the important work they have been doing with Her Turn in Brookings and the surrounding area.

According to a press release about the recent honor, “Her Turn is a non-profit organization designed to create more equitable sporting opportunities for girls and young women in Brookings. Her Turn provides scholarships for recipients to attend an overnight, SDSU sports camp at no cost, in addition to equipment and transportation.”

While in Los Angeles for the Gatorade Awards ceremony, Selland and Nelson were invited to attend the ESPY Awards, which are the annual awards given to athletes for their work and character on and off the court/field. The two SDSU collegiate women’s basketball standouts walked the red carpet for the ESPYs with some of the greatest athletes in the world.

Selland, a Letcher native and Sanborn Central graduate, had an outstanding college career, earning Summit League Player of the Year twice and leading her team to the 2022 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) Championship, where she earned WNIT Most Valuable Player honors. She is now heading overseas to continue her basketball career with BAXI Ferrol, a professional team in Spain for the 2023-24 season.

On Friday, June 30, the SDVFW Letcher Hawks Teeners teams welcomed the teams from Alexandria for a fun night of baseball, music, raffles, burgers and fireworks. The night started with the 14U teams and the Letcher Hawks taking a 2-10 loss.

Rylan Eggleston led things off on the pitcher’s mound for the Hawks. He allowed three hits and two runs over two and a third innings, striking out one. Parker Ettswold threw two and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.

At the plate, Ettswold and Eli White each collected one hit to lead Letcher offensively.

Between games, the Sanborn Central junior class drew the winner of their cooler full of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks as a fundraiser for prom next year. The winner was McKinley Simon of Woonsocket. During the games, the Letcher American Legion Auxiliary sold chances on the exquisite quilt that they will draw the winner for this fall. The 16U boys followed with their game, and they had a good battle with the Hawks coming up short and losing to Alexandria with a final score of 4-9.

McCoy Schulz opened the game pitching for the 16U Hawks. He gave up seven hits and seven runs over four and one-third innings, striking out two and walking two.

Bryce Larson led the Hawks offensively with two hits in four at bats. Larson and Wyatt Anderson each stole multiple bases in Letcher’s loss in the 16U game.
