Woonsocket

On Friday, Jan. 27, Jim VanDenHemel of Woonsocket was inducted into the South Dakota Technical Education Association’s (SDTEA) Hall of Fame. He was honored and received a plaque at the organization’s annual conference held last week.

VanDenHemel taught industrial technology classes in Woonsocket for 45 years. Another inductee to the Hall of Fame at this year’s conference was one of his students, former Woonsocket resident Tom Parquet, who also taught in the technical education field for many years at the Midland School District and ended in the Philip Area School in western South Dakota. In addition, another of VanDenHemel’s students, who is currently teaching industrial technology in Woonsocket, Darin Schmiedt, was an attendee at this year’s conference, so he got to witness the honor bestowed upon his predecessor.

Carver Lindsey lost two good friends, Dylan Klich and Kristian Kesary, in a car accident three years ago. So, for his senior project requirement this year, he wanted to do something in their memory. He looked into a few options and came up with the plan to raise money for a basketball hoop for the swimming pool in Woonsocket and to help the newly formed Esports program in Woonsocket. Dylan Klich was a sports fanatic, so the basketball hoop is in his memory, and Kristian Kesary was an avid video game player, so the support for the Esports program is in his memory.

Earlier this year, Lindsey sold shirts memorializing the interests of the boys and raised a fair amount of money, but he needed more to accomplish his goals. This past Saturday, with the help of his family and some friends, he hosted a Family Fun Night at the Woonsocket gym. They had a couple bouncy houses, some games for kids to play, a bake sale, a silent auction, face painting and Kathy McWhorter even offered “real” carnival cotton candy for attendees to enjoy.

A large crowd at the community meeting listen as Dr. Rod Weber, Superintendent of Woonsocket Schools, asks questions about the childcare issues in Woonsocket.

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, around 50 people congregated in the Woonsocket Community and Events Center to discuss the lack of daycare available in the Woonsocket community. The meeting was called by the Executive Board of the Woonsocket Community Care and Learning Center. The board members are Gay Swenson, Lisa Snedeker, Chelsea Schulz and Kayla Vetter. They organized the meeting for community members and daycare providers to come together and discuss the daycare crisis Woonsocket is currently having with no room for babies under the age of one in anyone’s daycare facility, including the center.

Lisa Snedeker spoke first to explain the purpose behind the meeting and to inform attendees about the situation the center is in. They have been running in the red for quite a while, and without funding from COVID money, it would be very difficult for them to stay open. They are trying to find solutions, but they are also concerned about the lack of daycare openings in Woonsocket. With the center open, there are waiting lists at all daycares, so that would only be worse if the center has to close. If the town loses more daycare, young families won’t be able to live here because they won’t have a place to take their kids while they work. Therefore, the biggest concern is not just keeping the center open but to figure out what can be done to provide more openings for daycare of any children under the age of one.
