Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET – The Woonsocket community hosted a blood drive with Vitalant on April 11 at the Woonsocket Community Center which helped collect a total of 26 units of blood products for patients in need.

A total of 29 individuals volunteered to donate blood and 23 individuals were able to successfully donate at the Vitalant blood drive on April 11. A total of three donors also came forward to donate Power Red Cells (2RBC) which collects two units of red blood cells while returning platelets, plasma and a saline solution back to the donor. There were two people who volunteered for the first time!

Vitalant expressed their gratitude to Julie Davis, who coordinated the drive, and the Woonsocket Community Center which provided the location for the blood drive.

The need for blood is constant and Vitalant strives to always keep a five-day supply of every blood type on the shelf to be able to meet the needs of patients across the region. Trauma and burn patients, premature infants, heart surgery patients, organ transplant recipients and people fighting cancer all require blood transfusions for their care.

Blood donations are needed daily to maintain a strong blood supply and meet ongoing patient needs. Vitalant encourages healthy individuals to make blood donation a part of one’s regular routine to help meet the ongoing needs.

Donors can make a convenient appointment to give blood at www.donors.vitalant.org or by calling 877- 25-VITAL. With each donation, donors receive a free total cholesterol test and earn reward points.

Blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments, while the blood draw typically taking less than 10 minutes. Donors can save about 20 minutes by completing their Health History Questionnaire the day they donate on www.vitalant.org/health.

No houses have been blown down, but the wind has been blowing relentlessly for days, and it just keeps coming back with force each day. It has been windy every day for approximately two weeks straight, and when we say windy, we don’t mean breezy, we mean windy. With some gusts from 25 to even 50-plus miles per hour for several days in the past 10 days, some parts of Sanborn County just couldn’t hold on any longer, and damage was done.

While a semi-truck was tipped over on SD Highway 37 for a while last Thursday, the roof started to peel off the Fibertech building that sits just to the east of the Local Lumber Yard property on the north side of SD Highway 34. The nice wooden fence that Anthony and Ericka Filter had built all around their yard did not weather well, as a large section of the fence on the west side of their back yard blew completely down flat to the ground. Many lawn ornaments and outdoor equipment from people’s yards all over the county were destroyed or blown into other areas.

According to Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley, there has been a burglary in Woonsocket that resulted in several counts of check forgery. Fridley stated that Christopher Condit is the name of a person of interest in the investigation of the crimes. Fridley stated that someone has been stealing from people’s mailboxes and forging checks. The culprit has cashed forged checks in Woonsocket, Jerauld County and Davison County. Condit is in his late 30s to early 40s and was last reported in North Dakota trying to cash a forged check from the same account.

In an unrelated story, there has been a report of someone shooting a goose off Lake Prior in the middle of Woonsocket. At around 9 a.m. one morning last week, a couple of young men working near the lake heard a gunshot and saw a goose flailing in the water. A pickup was spotted nearby with an older gentleman watching as the goose died and then drove away. Nothing was officially reported to the authorities, but it is important to remind everyone that it is illegal to discharge a firearm within the city limits.
