Unapproved Minutes of School Board Meeting

The School Board of Sanborn Central School District 55-5 met in regular session on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 7:05 p.m. in the Sanborn Central library with the following present: Curtis Adams, Clayton Dean, Mark Goral, Emma Klaas, and Gary Spelbring Jr. Others present were Superintendent/High School Principal Corey Flatten and Business Manager Gayle Bechen. Absent was Connie Vermeulen.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Motion by Klaas, seconded by Goral, all aye, to approve the agenda as printed. 

Motion by Goral, seconded by Spelbring, all aye, to approve the minutes of the regular board meeting on February 12, 2024, as printed.

Mr. Flatten reported on the following: 

• Legislative Update: The proposed four percent increase in aid seems to be looking closer to becoming the rate. SB 127 is the state accountability board bill that will require a minimum salary of $45,000 and a 97 percent accountability base. 

• The annual meeting with the school’s insurance pool will be held on Thursday, March 21 in Chamberlain. Bechen will attend. This will also factor into the district’s budgeting for the upcoming school year. 

• Senior Project work day will be held on April 2nd, 2024, with the final project presentation day being held on Friday, April 10th. 

• Spring activities are set to begin, with FFA CDEs already beginning and track and golf set to begin shortly. 

• Mr. Steele is taking the senior Government class to Northern State to watch the South Dakota State Supreme Court in action on March 20th. 

• Foundation Scholarship members met on March 4th to calculate the amount each graduating senior would be eligible to receive this year. That amount will be $2,700 for a fully vested student (attending Sanborn Central for seven-plus years). Congratulations, seniors, and thank you to everyone who continues to support this endeavor.

Mrs. Vermeulen’s Report: 

• The third quarter Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports parties were held March 6 and 7. High School/Middle School enjoyed Wii, bean bags, and laser tag. The elementary students danced the afternoon away. 

• The middle school lock-in and eighth grade coronation will be held on Thursday, March 14. 

• Mr. Flatten, Megan Wilson, Todd Welch and Mrs. Vermeulen will be rotating driving bus while Kelsey Kaiser is on maternity leave. 

• No school March 15 and 29. 

• “Breakfast with Buddies” for grades PreK through fifth was held on March 7. Breakfast included a donut and juice. One hundred fifty-seven adults preregistered for the event sponsored by the Booster Club. 

• The South Dakota ELA and math standardized testing is March 25 – May 3. Grades three through eighth and 11th will participate. The colony will receive a paper version (April 1-19). 

• Students in grades fifth and sixth have had the opportunity to participate in after school volleyball. 

• End of third quarter is March 7. 

• The Region IV Large Group Band Contest in Chamberlain is on March 20. 

• The Middle School Band Festival in Mitchell is on March 26. 

Discussion Items: 

• The board discussed the 15-passenger transit van purchased by the school. 

• The football field will be looked at by Mebius Landscaping in the near future. The spreading of dirt and seeding will also be looked at by Mebius. Pricing into a new sound system and portable bleachers were also discussed. 

• Mr. Flatten spoke to the board about teaming up with Santel to receive a grant to start an ESports team this fall. Randy Northrup of Santel Communications has been very helpful and supportive through the exploration of Sanborn Central participating in the league. 

• Board Member Curtis Adams showed the rest of the board a drawing of a possible garage shed that could be constructed to house the school vehicles and be used for storage. Collaboration between area businesses and the school’s Ag program would be the ideal means of constructing a garage

Old Business: None.

New Business:

Motion by Adams, seconded by Klaas, all aye, to approve the resignation of Chayna Jones from the position of Title teacher and thank her for her years of service. 

Motion by Klaas, seconded by Goral, all aye, to approve the contract of James “Pete” McWhorter for the position of CDL bus driver for $5,435.00 for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year.

Motion by Goral, seconded by Spelbring, all aye, to approve the certified and classified letters of intent for employment in the 2024-25 school year with the understanding that some reassignments and letters of intent to not rehire may be necessary.

Motion by Spelbring, seconded by Adams, all aye, to approve the extracurricular letters of intent for employment in the 2024-25 school year with the understanding that some reassignments and letters of intent to not rehire may be necessary.

Motion by Adams, seconded by Klaas, all aye, to go into executive session SDCL 1-25-2(1) to discuss personnel items with possible motions to follow at 8:15 p.m. Regular session resumed at 9:07 p.m.

The next regular Board meeting will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sanborn Central School.
