Jeff Boschee is pictured with all the food he collected at the 3-on-3 Tournament he hosted over the weekend as his senior project. Along with this food, he also collected $282.65 in monetary donations for the pantry to use.

In an effort to feed the hungry while providing an opportunity for young athletes to compete, Jeff Boschee organized a 3-on-3 tournament as his senior project requirement to graduate from Woonsocket High School. The only entry fee for the teams and fans was a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Sanborn County Food Pantry.

The tournament took place on Sunday, April 14 with 20 as the final number of teams who participated. There were teams from Mitchell, Wessington Springs, Lyman County, Hitchcock, James Valley Christian, Woonsocket and Sanborn Central. There were originally six divisions: fourth-fifth grade girls, fourth-fifth grade boys, sixth-eighth grade girls, sixth-eighth grade boys, high school girls and high school boys. There were no high school girls’ teams signed up, so the tournament ended with five champion teams. Winning the fourth and fifth-grade girls division were the JVC Ballers; the fourth and fifth-grade boys division champs were the Lyman Raiders; a team from Wessington Springs was the champion of the girls’ sixth-eighth grade division; the boys’ sixth-eighth grade champions were the Skibidi Alpha Sigmas from Mitchell; and the champions for the high school boys division were the Goons from Woonsocket High School.

The Woonsocket library was recently awarded a summer reading grant from the Stephanie Miller Davis foundation. This is the second year librarian Tracey Steele has applied for and been awarded the grant. The grant amount of $1,500 will help purchase summer reading kick off materials, as well as summer reading incentives throughout the summer months.

The Stephanie Miller-Davis Library Summer Reading Grant Program is in its fifth year of supporting summer reading programs in small rural communities in partnership with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) and the South Dakota State Library (SDSL). The program to date has distributed nearly $200,000 to libraries in rural communities across South Dakota.

the students who attended the Sanborn County 4-H Day Camp are pictured with Horizon Healthcare employees, CMA Bobbi White and CNP Katlyn Rostyne. First aid instruction was one of many topics covered at the Day Camp held in Forestburg.

Sanborn County 4-H held a Day Camp on April 1 at the 4-H Building, organized and led by Volunteers Lisa Snedeker, Pat Carsrud, and Paula Linke, 4-H Advisor Audra Scheel and 4-H Secretary Sherryl Rankin. The camp offered a day of learning and fun with numerous hands-on sessions. While the day started with registrations from 44 kids, the weather had other ideas and the snow kept some of the kids at home.

Horizon Health Care presented a First Aid session, teaching about basic first aid such as CPR, stop the bleed and how to use basic first aid supplies you may keep in a home kit. Horizon employees CNP Katlyn Rostyne and CMA Bobbi White and 4-H member Hope Baysinger set up three rotating stations to teach the first aid skills and also give out a kit of first aid supplies donated by Horizon Health Care. In the 4-H First Aid project area, 4-H’ers can enter a first aid kit in various categories.

South Dakota State University Extension Precision Agriculture Specialist Ali Mirzakhani Nafchi brought a team to present a session on precision agriculture. The session showed how the integration of computer technology with farm equipment, farm sensors, satellite imagery and drone imagery are changing ag production. The campers were able to participate in a hands-on activity to help understand how the information that is captured through sensors and imagery can be used by farmers to make better decisions for planting crops.  Ali also talked about various careers in the Precision Ag field.
