It was going to take two upsets on their opponents’ home courts for the Blackhawks to earn a trip to the SoDak 16, but they did not back down from the challenge laid before them and brought home two Region Tournament victories to land their spot in the SoDak 16.

The first obstacle was traveling to Platte on Tuesday, Feb. 27 to take on Platte-Geddes. The SCW Blackhawks overpowered the Black Panthers by outscoring them 26-17 in the second half and brought home their first Region 5 Tournament win with a 48-43 victory.

Next up was a rematch with the Parkston Trojans, who the Blackhawks had lost to earlier in the season by an 11-point deficit. The SCW boys shocked the Trojans with a response for anything the Parkston boys threw at them, and the Blackhawks rallied in the second half to keep their lead and never look back, winning the game 75-66 and earning a trip to the SoDak 16.

Leading the way for the Blackhawks was Boschee with a stellar performance, scoring 33 points, including his 1,000th career point that was announced and celebrated at the end of the game.

The Blackhawks went into the SoDak 16 seeded as number 16, which brought them up against the number one seed, Sioux Falls Christian. They played Tuesday night, March 5, in Hartford. Results will be printed in next week’s issue of the Sanborn Weekly Journal.

For his senior project requirement, Carter Hitchcock put on a science fair for eighth through 11th grade Sanborn Central students on Feb. 23 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Visitors were given tickets, and were instructed to vote for their favorite project after they had visited all of the stations. Projects included how runoff impacts farming, how different types of therapy help people, testing the effectiveness of different hair heat protectants, and how a photoelectric sensor will help detect combine fires.

Hitchcock chose to put on a science fair for his senior project because he is pursuing a career as a science teacher. He has been preparing for several months by preparing the project guidelines, coordinating with students and teachers, and gathering materials such as the presentation boards. He stated the most challenging part of the project was making sure the students were on track with the timeline he provided for them and ultimately making sure the projects got done on time. He does feel like the project was a success as the presenters seemed to enjoy their projects and there were lots of visitors who came and found the projects interesting.

Woonsocket volunteers build beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace

By Randy Northrup, Santel Sales and Marketing Manager

It was a beautiful, sunny and 70-degree day in Woonsocket for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build to provide beds for children in need.

This community bed build event was made possible by the arrival of the Woonsocket CTE class and their instructor, Darin Schmiedt, the Santel and Tech Solutions staff and the SHP crew. Santel Communications sponsored the costs of the bed build and the event, which started with a lunch served at about 11:30 a.m., followed by photos taken, instruction from SHP,  a prayer and then the bed build at 12:30 p.m. By about 3:30 p.m., they were putting the SHP brand on the 21 beds that were produced. They were also able to prep another dozen for future completion.

Barbara Lorenz, SD-Huron Chapter President along with her husband, the delivery and construction coordinator, organized the crew to make a difference in children’s lives by providing beds for those who do not have a bed to sleep in. If you have anyone from 7 to 17 that does not have a bed to sleep in, you can go to https://shpbeds.org/apply/.
