Leland Olson

Mitchell

Leland Dean “Ole” Olson, 87, of Mitchell, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at his home. 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, at Mitchell Wesleyan Church.  Interment will be at the Columbarium at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery with full military rites.  

Leland was born on Jan. 1, 1934, in Forestburg, to Robert and Vera (Howe) Olson.  He attended school in Artesian.  Leland later joined the Army and became a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles,” jumping a total of 18 times.  He also played football for the Army.  He worked as a paramedic, firefighter, carpenter, business owner and a police officer.  

Leland married Elizabeth McKee on Nov. 25, 1962, and the two were inseparable until her death on May 23, 2021.  Leland lived in South Dakota until the age of 40 when he moved to Colorado, returning to South Dakota in 2005.  

Leland enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and camping.  He and Elizabeth also loved to dance. He took care of his family, even up until the day he passed away, constantly trying to take care of his daughters.  

Leland is survived by his children, Sondra Waltenbaugh and Sheri (Jeff) Fowler; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Leland was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son, Steven; and two brothers, Robert and James Olson.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to either the Wesleyan Church or the Disabled American Veterans Association in his name.  

Bob Lane

Forestburg

Robert “Bob” Lane, 85, of Forestburg, died Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. 

Funeral services were held Monday, June 21, at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Burial followed at the Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Bob was born in Rochester, N.Y. to Mark and Ethel (VanOrdeier) Lane.

Bob served in the US Army from 1952-1955 and was in the 24th Infantry Division, Far East Command, in Korea. While in Korea, he cleared anti-personnel mines and anti-tank mines along the DMZ for 17 months.  Bob held the UN Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, ROK presidential unit Citation, and Korean Defense Service Medal. In 2002, he received the US Korean Service Medal from Senator Tim Johnson. Bob was a lifetime member of the VFW post 2752 in Mitchell.

After the war, Bob was united in marriage to Barbara Burley in 1957. To this union, five children were born.

Bob was an EMT in Rochester, N.Y. He also owned and operated an ambulance company for over 20 years. He then moved to Phoenix, Ariz. where he drove truck before becoming employed at Cook Healthcare in Phoenix. This is where he met his life partner and best friend, Becky Zoss. In June of 1992, they moved to Forestburg where he worked at PVCC in Woonsocket as a certified nursing assistant. Bob retired in 2002.

Bob is survived by his life partner/best friend of over 31 years, Becky Zoss; four daughters, Marsha Lane of Sun City, Ariz., Melonie Lane of Gold Bar, Wash., Melinda Lane of Filmore, Utah, and Jane Kelly of Rochester, N.Y.; two sons, Robert Lane Jr. and William (Cathy) Lane of Sun City, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ginger Benson of Arizona, Susie Rindlisbaker of Idaho, Bonnie Molinari of New York, and Shirley (Terry) Huntoon of New York; one brother, Joseph (Felicia) Molinari of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Ethel; a daughter, Mary; sister, Virginia Lane; brothers, Richard and Ronald Lane; his niece, Lisa; and his first friend in South Dakota, Granny.

Max Hansen

Huron

Max Hansen, 85, of Huron, died Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Prairie View Healthcare Center at Woonsocket.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Max Hansen was born Sept. 14, 1935, to John and Hilda (Hueschen) Hansen in Sioux Falls. The family then moved to Huron. Max graduated from Huron High School. After graduation, Max enlisted into the United States Air Force.

Max met M. Jean Westmoreland at Greenville, S.C. They were married on June 27, 1958. In 1964, Max and Jean moved to Huron, where he worked at Hansen Oil Equipment.

He enjoyed making model airplanes and flying them.

Max is survived by three sons, Mitchell Hansen, Michael (Deanna) Hansen and Marcus Hansen; four grandchildren; and one sister, Cathleen Holmes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, M. Jean Hansen.
