Shirley Mae (Godber) Mickelson died on Oct. 8, 2020, at Avera Brady Rehabilitation Center in Mitchell.   

A private graveside service for immediate family will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.  A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held sometime in the future when all family and friends can attend safely. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Lutheran Social Services or Trinity Cemetery Maintenance fund.

Shirley was born in Letcher on March 17, 1930, to Carlos and Cleo (Kane) Godber.  As a young woman, she enjoyed leading the Letcher High School Band as a majorette, and later, she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls to earn her teaching license.

On Aug. 13, 1950, Shirley married Elmer Kenneth Mickelson at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Letcher, to whom she was married for 70 years. Throughout her life, Shirley was a dedicated and loving wife and mother, a schoolteacher, as well as a joyful and devoted Christian who donated thousands of hours of service to her community and her church.  Shirley and Elmer were life-long members of Storla Lutheran Church in Storla.

During their marriage, Elmer and Shirley loved traveling on the road in their classic cars with the Horseless Carriage Car Club, making an homage to Norway, and traveling to visit family and friends throughout the United States.

Shirley is survived by her soul mate of 70 years, Elmer Mickelson; two children, Darcy (Karen) Mickelson of rural Mount Vernon and Crystal Mickelson of Lakeville, Minn.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Grace M. Zimmerman, 93, of Huron, passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at Huron Regional Medical Center. 

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Her funeral will be live-streamed through the Welter Funeral Home Facebook page at the start of her funeral service. CDC guidelines are in place, and masks are required for the visitation/funeral service.

Grace, the daughter of Walter and Ruby Hay, was born on June 21, 1927, at Devil’s Lake, N.D. She attended school at McKinley in Huron. Grace met her future husband, Oliver Zimmerman, while roller-skating and was impressed by the back flips that he would do for her that won her heart.

Grace married Oliver Zimmerman on Oct. 19, 1949, at the United Methodist Church in Huron. The couple made their home on the family farm near Forestburg. Grace was a homemaker, and her brothers looked forward to her meals, especially her chocolate cake when they came out to hunt on the family farm. She was a 4-H leader and judge for the State Fair and many counties in the area for over 50 years. She was also a member of Women’s Extension.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her daughter, Connie (Todd) Paye of Cavour; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother, Kenny (Faye) Hay of Parker; sisters-in-law, Virginia Baysinger of Huron and Kathleen Zimmerman of Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oliver in 2014; daughter, Sandra Zimmerman; son, Douglas Zimmerman; grandson, Dylan Paye; and her six brothers and sisters.

Ted Peterman

Huron

Ted Peterman, 98, of Huron, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, at the Prairie View Healthcare Center at Woonsocket. 

His funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 8, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation was held prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Ted Peterman was born Oct. 14, 1921, to William E. and Dollie E. (Bowen) Peterman, at Kadoka. He attended school at Lake Preston, where he graduated in 1939. In his early years, Ted spent a lot of time in Lake Preston. He was a lifeguard and homecoming king.

On June 5, 1940, Ted was accepted in the United States Army Band. He was a member of the 267th Army Ground Force Band. He sat first chair in the trumpet section and was selected to play Taps at the funeral service for President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Warm Springs, Calif. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 18, 1945, as a sergeant, during World War II.

On Feb. 18, 1949, Ted married Lois. L Petersen. On Oct. 29, 1949, he graduated from the Minnesota School of Business. He then was a business instructor for Northwest College of Commerce from 1949 to 1950. From 1951 to 1953, Ted was employed by the United States government. In 1953, he became the office manager for Verschoor Chevrolet. In 1961, he started his own insurance agency and then received his real estate broker’s license in 1962. He became a partner with Keith Montgomery in 1967 and retired from the Montgomery Agency on Oct. 12, 2001. Ted enjoyed building model train sets, traveling and Cadillacs.

Ted was a member of the Huron Municipal Band for 62 years. Since 1954, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer, Chairman of the Methodist Administrative Board, President of the Methodist Men’s Club, and was a seventh grade Sunday School Teacher. Ted was also a member of the American Legion since 1946 and a member of the Kiwanis Club for 34 years.

Ted is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois Peterman; two daughters, Candy (Dale) Guthmiller and Vickie (Dennis) Rans; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one niece; two great-nieces; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dollie Peterman; sister, Patricia Bendergruetter; mother-in-law, Mary Petersen; biological mother, Eva (Bender) Peterman; sisters-in-law, Melva Carlson and Vivian Toelle; brother-in-law, Hugh Carlson; niece and nephew, Cindy Winter and Douglas Toelle; and grandson, Trisdon Rans.
