Eunice Olson

Woonsocket

Eunice S. Olson, 92, of Woonsocket, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at Avera Brady Health Nursing Home in Mitchell. 

Her funeral service was held Saturday, March 14, at the Forestburg 4-H building. Burial was in the Silver Creek Cemetery, rural Woonsocket. Visitation was Friday, March 13, at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket and one hour prior to the service in Forestburg.

Eunice Sofia Pearson was born Dec. 11, 1927, to Bert and Ella (Mauer) Pearson on the family farm near Forestburg. She attended the Mauer School until eighth grade and then attended Forestburg High School until she graduated in 1945. After graduation she attended General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison. She started teaching country school at the age of 17. She returned to General Beadle for a second-year degree, which increased her salary. She continued teaching until 1950.

She married Arthur Olson in 1948. They bought a farm northwest of Forestburg, started farming and continued until 2009 when Arthur passed away. Her family continues operating the family farm.

She was a life-long member of Forestburg Lutheran Church. She spent the last five years at Brady, where she enjoyed spending her time with friends and staff.

She is survived by six children, Gary (Karla) Olson of Woonsocket, Terry (Lori) Olson of Rapid City, Carol (Bill) Krumrei of Kansas City, Dale (Jackie) Olson of Woonsocket, Luci (Jim) Grassel of Woonsocket and Lori (Jack) Sturgeon of Lehi, Utah; and 69 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; her parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Harley Crandall, 81, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at the Firesteel Healthcare Center at Mitchell.

His funeral service was held Saturday, March 7, at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Harley James Crandall was born April 5, 1938, to Glen Ivan and Nina Audrey (Dubro) Crandall in rural Sanborn County. He attended Maurer School. For over 30 years, Harley worked for Eugene McClain’s honeybee operation as a beekeeper.

On Jan. 29, 2000, Harley married Ruby Newman.

Harley enjoyed his motorcycle, collecting odds and ends, buying and selling cars, and listening to Christian country music.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 20 years, Ruby Crandall of Huron; two sons, David (Sherri) Crandall of Sioux Falls and Curtis Crandall of Huron; two siblings, Roger Crandall of Redfield and Shirley Visconti of Sioux Falls; three step-children, David Newman of Omaha, Robert Newman of Sioux Falls, and Charles Newman of Springfield; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; an honorary grandchild; an honorary son-in-law; Ron Gilbert; five nephews; one sister-in-law, Lori Meyers of Huron; and one brother-in-law, Eli (Cindy) Wipf of Watertown.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Darlis Fischer; two brothers, Melvin Crandall and Darrel Crandall; two grandsons, Angelo Lee and Lee Angelo; one nephew, Troy Crandall; and one brother-in-law, Rev. John Visconti.

Vinetta Shonley

Mitchell

Vinetta May Shonley, 93, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, March 6, 2020, at Avera Brady Nursing Home.   

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 10, with a prayer and Eastern Star service at Mitchell Downtown First United Methodist Church. The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m., at the Mitchell Downtown First United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Wessington Springs.        

Vinetta May was born on a farm northwest of Letcher on May 27, 1926, to Howard and Alta (Hathaway) Edwards. She attended country schools and graduated from Letcher High School. Following graduation, she went to work in Mitchell at the Daily Republic, and later at Scallin Drug Store.

She married Tom Shonley of Ethan, on Sept. 24, 1947. She worked at the family hardware store, and after the family moved to Wessington Springs in 1957, Vinetta worked at the office of Drs. Dean and McManus, and later Ben Franklin, Weskota Manor and as Executive Director of Wessington Springs Public Housing, known as Hillcrest Heights, for seventeen years.

Vinetta was a caring person and enjoyed doing word search puzzles. She was a member of the Mitchell Downtown United Methodist Church, Eastern Star of Wessington Springs, and other organizations in Wessington Springs earlier in her life.

She is survived by three daughters, Janet, Diane (Arne) Waltmire and Leana (Roger) Stunes; two sons, Cary (Judy) and Gene (Carla); 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law.

Vinetta was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Irma; mother and father-in-law; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
