Obituaries

Elma E. “Toby” Nurnberg, 75, of Forestburg, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were held, Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Forestburg Lutheran Church. Burial followed at Silver Creek Cemetery, rural Forestburg. Visitation was Friday, Jan. 12, also at the church.

Elma Eileen Hunter was born on Nov. 20, 1948, in Mitchell, to Royce and Myrna (Adams) Hunter. She grew up in Forestburg, where she attended school and graduated from Forestburg High School in 1967. On July 2, 1967, Elma married Doug Nurnberg at the Forestburg Lutheran Church. To this union, four boys were born.

Elma worked many years at Van Dyke’s Taxidermy in Woonsocket, where she was a graphic artist in charge of the annual catalog layout. Following her time there, Elma and Doug started their own business, D&E Enterprises in Forestburg. The business consisted of creating custom vinyl zipper bags for businesses across the region. The couple operated the business together until they retired, at which time the business closed.

Elma and Doug were members of a band called the “Sidewinders,” where she loved to sing. She spent countless miles on the road with him while he was selling and delivering vinyl bags to customers. Elma enjoyed spending time with Doug and was proud of “their boys.”

She was a member of the Forestburg Lutheran Church, where she was in the church choir. Elma loved wildlife and animals. She had a special place in her heart for her dogs. She was a soft-spoken woman who seldom had a bad thing to say about anyone.

Elma is survived by her sons, Russ (Kathy) Nurnberg of Watertown, Clint (Jeniffer) Nurnberg of Mitchell, and Scott Nurnberg of Forestburg; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five siblings, Murial (Cliff) Nitschke of Jamestown, N.D., Dwight (Christine) Hunter of Forestburg, Sandi (Kevin) Bradwisch of White Lake, Ed (Margarita) Hunter of Monterey, Calif., and Becky Zoss of Forestburg; one sister-in-law, Peggy Hunter of Dardanelle, Ark.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doug; son, Jason; grandson, Blake; three siblings, Donna Swearingen, Bob Hunter, and Bill Hunter; one sister-in-law, Judy Hunter; and one brother-in-law, Wilbur Swearingen.

Jerry Miller

Woonsocket

Jerome “Jerry” Leo Miller, 71, of Woonsocket, passed away on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at home, ending his battle with cancer.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 5-7 p.m. at Basham Funeral Service in Woonsocket. Funeral services will be held at the Woonsocket Community Center on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m.

Jerry was the only child of Larry and Anna (Steichen) Miller. He was born on April 8, 1952. He graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1970 and attended Dakota State College in Madison from 1970-1972, studying Industrial Arts Education. He decided to enlist in the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1972 and was trained as a heavy equipment operator. After his military training, he worked for Weelborg Construction, the City of Woonsocket, the Sanborn County Highway Department and farmed. On Sept. 1, 1973, Jerry married Valerie Ann Kogel in Woonsocket, and they were blessed with two children. In 1978, they purchased a farm east of Woonsocket where they have lived since. After 30 years working with the County, Jerry retired in 2007 and farmed fulltime.

Jerry was a loyal patron of Don’s Silver Dollar and Skeeters. The staff were considered friends, and he played in a pool league for several years. Jerry enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, and attending sporting activities watching his kids and grandkids. After retirement, their summer home “The Perch” in Gettysburg became his second love, and he spent nearly every weekend fishing and socializing in the summer.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Val of Woonsocket; children, Melinda Fedeler (Jeremey) of Madison and Rocky (Jackie) of Brandon; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Gordon and Mary Kogel; cousins, Richard Miller and Dean Miller; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Mary Alice Moe

Sioux Falls

Mary Alice Moe, 93, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Woonsocket, passed away on Jan. 8, 2024.

Funeral services will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, at noon with a luncheon to follow. Family will be present at Heritage Funeral Home for visitation two hours before the service.

Mary Alice Parsons was born on Nov. 19, 1930 to Darrell and Alice Parsons in Greenfield, Mass. At three weeks of age, she moved to Woonsocket with her parents. After graduating from Woonsocket High School in 1948, Mary attended college for a time at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn.

On April 17, 1950, Mary was wed to Wallace Moe of Woonsocket. Mary and Wally lived on a farm northeast of Woonsocket for several years before moving to DeSmet and finally back to Woonsocket, where Mary lived with Wally until his death in 2008. Mary moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to her children in 2015. 

When Mary had her first child, Micki, she decided to dedicate her life to being a loving and caring mother. Mary made it her mission to support and add to the lives of others. Her positive attitude and outlook on life was appreciated by those around her.  

Throughout the years, Mary also spent time working in the DeSmet school district, VanDyke Supply, and served as the secretary/bookkeeper for the Sanborn County Highway Department for 27 years until her retirement at age 74. Mary was a member of a local women’s Supper Club that met monthly for over 50 years. 

Mary is survived by her children, Micki (Rick) Fager of Sioux Falls, Sheri (Mark) Trudeau of Brookings, Leann (Chuck) Doran of Elk Point, Scott (Cheryl) Moe of Sioux Falls, Roxanne (Dick) Peters of Tea, Tonya Moe (Matt Knock) of Tea, and Jonathan (Ashley) Moe of Emmettsburg, Iowa; her sister, Jean Hurlbert of Green Valley, Ariz. and Sioux Falls; her sister-in-law, Ila Anderson of Huron; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wallace; her daughter, Caryn Moe; her sisters, Helen Zentkowski, Pat Roache, Dorothy Kiefer, and Linda Druse; her brothers, Robert Parsons and Richard Parsons; and her brother-in-law, Keith Moe and his wife, Karen, of Woonsocket.
