Wessington Springs

Elizabeth “Betty” Redl, 91, of Wessington Springs, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, with burial at the Veteran Cemetery in Sioux Falls at a later date. Visitation was Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. 

Betty was born Dec. 4, 1931, in White Rock to Martin and Catherine Zapp.  She was the seventh of twelve children in the family. She attended school in Woonsocket and Carthage. She married Bruce Redl on Sept. 20, 1958.

They moved to Wessington Springs and resided there for over 50 years. Bruce and Betty both worked for many years at the American State Bank until their retirement.  In her spare time, she enjoyed baking, gardening, golfing, bowling and playing cards with friends. She was active in the Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Betty is survived by her husband, Bruce; children, Brenda Redl and Barbara (Pat) Bruhn; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Lottie Wilson of Reno, Nev., and Joyce Johnson (Ed) of Kenosha, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Catherine Zapp, and siblings, Katherine Senska, Martin Zapp, John Zapp, Arlene Becker, Leo Zapp, Clarence Zapp, Eugene Zapp, and Tom Zapp.  

Mary Ann Dorris, 84, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her family. 

Her Mass of Christian Burial was on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, with burial at Fedora Cemetery in Fedora. Visitation was on Friday, Jan. 27, at Welter Funeral Home, with a scripture service.

Mary Ann Shetler was born on July 9, 1938, in Rochester, Mich., to parents Roy and Mary Avo (Simmons) Shetler. At the age of three, her family moved to Cabool, Mo., where Mary attended Cabool schools.

Mary married Lowell D. Dorris on April 27, 1957, in Cabool. Mary and Lowell lived in various cities due to Lowell’s military service, including two tours in Germany in 1963 and 1968. They moved to Huron in 1973. Mary worked as a cook in Kansas, Loopy’s Clerk in Huron, a Pink Lady at Huron Regional Medical Center, and various other jobs.

Mary devoted many hours to volunteering, including HRMC for over 10 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and Beadle County Nutrition Center. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Huron. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, computer, hunting, fishing, camping and Bingo.

Mary is survived by her children, Terrie Scott of Woonsocket, Mary (Randy) Bitterman of Huron, Lowell (Teresa) Dorris Jr., of Madison, Cheryl (Paul) Arneson of South Sioux City, Neb., Deborah (Alan Sr.) Larson of Woonsocket, and Sarah (Dennis) Dorris of Huron; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Glenda Millington and Jerry Shetler, both of Brooksdale, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Donna Hannebohn of Kansas and Cora May Shetler of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Dorris Sr.; her parents; five brothers, Charles Hannebohn, Donald, Floyd, Lonnie, and Harold Shetler; three sisters, Judy Points, Flora May, and Vicky Shetler; two sons-in-law, Ervin Scott and Paul Arneson; and one great-grandson, Noah Paul Phipps.

HARLAN GOUDY

Mitchell

Harlan Goudy, 87, of Mitchell, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. 

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Jan. 23, at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements were by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Harlan Clifford Goudy was born Jan. 28, 1935, to Clarence Clifford Goudy and Gertrude Henrietta Clara Fredlake in Forestburg.

Harlan was an avid athlete in baseball and basketball during high school and college, and was a baseball coach. He was a multiple medal winner in Senior Olympics. Harlan loved dancing at Ruskin Park, was an antique car fanatic, and enjoyed South Dakota pheasant hunting.

Harlan married Barbara Jean Hendrick on Dec. 31, 1960, in Phoenix, Ariz., and they were married for 62 years.

Harlan served in the United States Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge, he received his Bachelor of Science Aerospace Engineering from the University of Arizona. He worked for Professional Engineer Mechanical Engineering, and in 1976, he created and operated Goudy Engineering, Inc.

Harlan was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Barb; sons, Kevin (Dolores) Goudy of Tucson, Ariz., and Kurt (Heather) Goudy of Newton, Conn.; daughter, Shawna Goudy of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and sister, LaWayne (Goudy) Petesch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Gertrude, and his father and mother-in-law, Bernard and Maxine Hendrick.
