The end of the school year usually presents time for the annual class field trips. At Woonsocket School, the Woonsocket Elementary Parents Club (WEPC) funds a majority of the trips the elementary students take each year. This year, the kindergarten and first grade students went to Huron for an entertaining and educational trip. They visited the Nordby Center and went swimming for a couple hours, ate Domino’s pizza for lunch, played some games together in the gym and then went to Dakota Energy Cooperative to learn about the job of the power linemen and measures that should be taken to be safe around electricity. At the end of the day, each student received a bag of parting gifts from Willie Wire Hands and the rest of the staff at Dakota Energy.

On Wednesday, May 10, the Woonsocket fourth grade class took their informational texts they have been working on and read them to the residents of Prairie View Healthcare Center. Their topics were South Dakota Attractions. They read with various residents, and then afterwards, they were able to play card games together (lots of garbage, and one resident taught a student how to play poker) and enjoy cookies and juice. To finish it off, they sang their spring concert songs to the residents. I think everyone had a wonderful time! I couldn’t have been more proud of my students!

The third-grade class in Woonsocket put together a book about theme parks. Each student was assigned a theme park that they had to research and write about, and they put their essays/stories together to make their own book called “Third Grade Theme Park Research.” They had to do their own writing and illustrations. On Friday, May 5, the students invited their parents and/or grandparents to the school to see their new creation and hear the students read their section of the book.
