Carver Lindsey lost two good friends, Dylan Klich and Kristian Kesary, in a car accident three years ago. So, for his senior project requirement this year, he wanted to do something in their memory. He looked into a few options and came up with the plan to raise money for a basketball hoop for the swimming pool in Woonsocket and to help the newly formed Esports program in Woonsocket. Dylan Klich was a sports fanatic, so the basketball hoop is in his memory, and Kristian Kesary was an avid video game player, so the support for the Esports program is in his memory.

Earlier this year, Lindsey sold shirts memorializing the interests of the boys and raised a fair amount of money, but he needed more to accomplish his goals. This past Saturday, with the help of his family and some friends, he hosted a Family Fun Night at the Woonsocket gym. They had a couple bouncy houses, some games for kids to play, a bake sale, a silent auction, face painting and Kathy McWhorter even offered “real” carnival cotton candy for attendees to enjoy.

PIERRE – School systems across South Dakota have been granted more than $260,000 in School Nutrition Program equipment grants for new equipment or to renovate/replace existing equipment.

“Food service professionals all over our state work hard every day to provide students delicious, healthy meals,” said Cheriee Watterson, the Department of Education’s director of Child and Adult Nutrition Services. “This equipment will help them keep their programs top-notch by supporting their ability to do more cooking from scratch, use more fresh produce, and expand participation in lunch and breakfast programs.”

Sanborn Central Food Service Director Laura Conrad applied for and was awarded a grant. The grant award amount was for $25,000, which will be used to purchase and install a new convection oven, to replace the existing two ovens that have served the district well. Congratulations to Laura for winning the grant award!

These grants are funded with federal dollars from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service and competitively awarded to eligible entities.

Students in third through sixth grade participated in local grade-level spelling bees at Sanborn Central.

Spelling bees are conducted in rounds. The spelling bee is conducted orally. Each speller at the start of the round spells one word. If the spelling is incorrect, that student is eliminated. The words are taken from Eaton’s True Blue Contest Speller.

The names of the winners and alternates from each grade level are forwarded to the Mitchell Area Spelling Bee committee. The Mitchell Area Spelling bee will be held on Feb. 5 at DWU.

The Sanborn Central alternates include: Hunter Morris, Jason Lamb, Colton Nelson, and Brooklyn Larson. The winners are comprised of: Carlee Spelbring, Keira Pollard, Kelly Wilson, and Carley Edwards. Alternates will participate on contest day only if those originally designated as contestants are unable to attend.

The winners at the Mitchell Area contest do not advance to any future contests.
