February is American Heart Health Awareness Month, so, students at Woonsocket Elementary were asked to take part in the Kids Heart Challenge as part of the Physical Education (PE) program in Woonsocket. At an assembly on Thursday, Feb. 27, the students and staff celebrated raising $3,407.95 to donate to the American Heart Association for research.

PE teacher, Trey Weber, announced that 29 students signed up, and 19 students completed Finn’s Mission, which is a list of seven tasks that each participant was asked to complete to earn a prize for completing them. The tasks included sending messages to potential donors, giving a gift of your own, sharing on social media, taking part in learning hands-only CPR, among others. The mission is named after a boy named Finn, who is a survivor of heart surgery after being born with several heart defects.

Hannah Hinker, daughter of Jeff and Peg Hinker, set a new record for Accelerated Reading points achieved in one year. Tuesday, Feb. 25, was declared “Hannah Hinker Day” by librarian, Jolene Enfield.  Hannah, a fourth grader at Sanborn Central, has achieved 722.8 points since school started in August.  Her personal goal is to achieve 1,000 points by the end of the year. The previous record was set in 2009 by John Blindauer who was then in grade seven. Students are required to read books and then take a comprehension test on the computer.  Students then earn points.  The number of points are based upon the reading level of the book and the student’s accuracy on the test. Congratulations, Hannah!

Is there a doctor in the house? There was a third grade classroom in Woonsocket full of them last week on Tuesday and Wednesday! The students learned about the body through various activities, and then the learning activities were also focused around surgery. Fractions were cut, finding the area of rectilinear rectangles by cutting them into parts; contractions were cut and stitched together with apostrophes; and compound sentences were adhered with conjunctions on bandaids. The students got into character with all the surgical attire, as well as stethoscopes around their necks, a syringe shaped pen to do their work, and a prescription of candy treats to keep them energized through the daily tasks. So much engagement filled our days, as we demonstrated our learning of many concepts.
