Blackhawks face tough teams at home

Ladies finishes with strong win over Ethan in three

The SCW Blackhawks volleyball ladies hosted two competitive teams on their home courts last week. They started with playing Hanson in Forestburg on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Unfortunately, the Beaverettes dammed up the Blackhawks’ chance at a win and swam away with a victory in four sets with scores of 18-25, 23-25, 25-20 and 16-25.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, SCW welcomed the Ethan Rustlers to Woonsocket. The teams were very compatible, but the Lady Blackhawks proved to be the more determined squad as they won the battle and earned the win in three sets with scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22.

The SCW Blackhawks’ varsity volleyball team is now 3-2 on the season. They were in Corsica on Tuesday night for an evening full of games starting with junior high at 4 p.m. They are in Parkston tonight (Thursday) with junior high starting at 4 p.m. They then compete in the Wolsey-Wessington Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14. They host Wessington Springs next Tuesday night in Woonsocket with junior high starting at 4 p.m.

Grant Edwards takes off with one of his three interceptions in the Blackhawks’ game against Lead-Deadwood in Wessington Springs last week.

Last Friday night, the WWSSC Blackhawks hosted the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers in Wessington Springs and sent the Golddiggers searching to strike elsewhere as the Blackhawks earned their second win of the season with a 42-6 victory.

Regarding last Friday’s game, Head Coach Michael Schmitz stated, “The Blackhawks took another good step forward. We did some really good things on offense to continue to move the ball. The team is really coming together and playing with a lot of fun. The defense started to play faster with more confidence.”

The Blackhawks have a bye this week, and then they play Webster in Wessington Springs on Friday, Sept. 13 for Homecoming. The game starts at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the SCW varsity volleyball ladies took on the AC/DC Thunder for their first round of play in the Hanson Early Bird Tournament. With the loss of several seniors last year, and a group of new team members entering the rotation, the Blackhawks had a rough start, ending their first round with a 0-2 loss. Set scores were 19-25 and 23-25, proving the girls were right at the cusp of where they needed to be, but just needed a little more push to get the win.

In the second night of play on Thursday night, the Blackhawks found their groove and that push they needed, as they beat Freeman in two sets with scores of 25-20 and 25-23.

In their final round of the tournament, the Blackhawks were in the running for fifth place against the Wessington Springs Spartans. SCW had a slow start with a tough 11-25 loss, but they battled back in the next two sets, winning with scores of 25-10 and 25-17 to earn fifth place in their first competition of the season.

The SCW ladies were on the court again on Tuesday against Hanson and against Ethan on Thursday, both at home. Look for results and stats for those games in next week’s issue. Their next game is on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in Corsica, and then they go to Parkston next Thursday. Follow the Blackhawks on the home-school’s online streaming service to see that action right from the comfort of home or join the crowds at the gym. Junior varsity games start at around 6:30 p.m.
