Sanborn County 4-H Shooting Sports recorded a solid year in 2024, with 14 new shooters, numerous county records set, and 52 shooters qualifying for the State Shoot in 123 events.  

The Shooting Sports program offers multiple disciplines in guns and archery.  The gun disciplines include BB Gun (BB), Air Pistol (AP), Air Rifle (AR), .22 CMP Rifle (22CMP), .22 3-Position Rifle (22-3P), .22 Pistol (22P).  Archery disciplines include Compound Bow Without Sights (CWOS), Compound Without Sights with Release (CWOS-R), Compound With Sights (CWS), Compound With Sights with Release (CWS-R), Recurve Bow With Sights (RWS), Recurve Without Sights (RWOS), and Compound Open (C-Open).

In many of the disciplines there are different requirements, positions and/or shooting distances depending on the age level. 

Following are this year’s state-qualifying participants and their disciplines.

Also participating in Shooting Sports this year were Hudson Cope, Henry Hunter, Elsie and Amelia Klaas, Myles Larson, Kolby Lindsey, and Makenna and Jackson Wolter.

County Shoot placings are decided over the county match shoots from January through April.  The top scores from the match shoots are used to determine the first, second and third place finishes for the county level. State Shoot was held April 26-28 in Ft. Pierre/Pierre.

On April 22, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket junior high track team traveled to Alexandria to compete at the Hanson Eager Beaver meet.

The SCW seventh-grade girls who placed sixth or better individually included Shiloh Terkildsen, fourth in 100M dash with 15.0 seconds, fourth in 200M dash with 32.7 seconds; Sawyer Larson, third in 100M hurdles with 20.0 seconds; Kaidence Fridley, fourth in 400M dash with 1:12.0; Cheyann Larson, fifth in 200M dash with 32.8 seconds; Carly Edwards, fourth in disc with 54 ft. 2 in.; and Brooklyn Larson, fourth in long jump with 12 ft. 1 in.

For the seventh-grade boys, Gavin Scofield earned fourth in 200M dash with 31 seconds, and Mathias Lindgren received sixth in 100M dash with 22.9 seconds, sixth in disc with 59 ft. 11 in. and sixth in shotput with 21 ft. 7.25 in.

The eighth-grade Blackhawk girls who placed sixth or better in individual events included Jayda Hohn, third in 100M dash with 14.4 seconds and second in 800M run with 3:01.8; Ellie Hofer, third in 800M run with 3:05.1; Kenzie Uecker, fourth in disc with 61 ft. 0 in. and fourth in shotput with 28 ft. 11 in.; and Kaylee Viktora, fifth in shotput with 27 ft. 10 in.

For the eighth-grade boys, Teagan Eggleston got fifth place in the 400M dash with 1:01.0.

The seventh-grade girls team of C. Larson, Ramsey Fouberg, Fridley and B. Larson came in fourth in the 400M Relay with a time of 1:04.3.

The eighth-grade girls 800M relay team of Hohn, B. Larson, Fouberg and K. Fridley placed second with 2:09.9. The eighth-grade girls medley relay team of Hofer, Fouberg, B. Larson and S. Larson came in second with 2:16.7.

The eighth-grade boys 800M relay team of Scofield, Ledoux Bracha, Westen White and Eggleston finished fourth place with 2:00.5. The eighth-grade boys medley relay team of Scofield, Bracha, White and Eggleston won third with 2:01.0.

The final junior high track meet of the season was the 281 Conference meet that took place on Wednesday, May 1, after being rescheduled due to weather.

The Blackhawks varsity track and field team has had a difficult time getting in meets since the weather has been so stormy the past few weeks, but a clear day arrived on Tuesday, April 23, as the SCW team traveled to Miller for a competition scheduled to make up for the missed meets during the previous week. 

Individuals who placed in the top eight of their events are as follows: Liz Boschee, first in 100M hurdles (17.02 seconds), first in 300M hurdles (49.91 seconds), second in high jump (4 ft. 8 in.), first in long jump (14 ft. 8 in.); Aubrey Senska, seventh in high jump (4 ft. 2 in.), seventh in triple jump (26 ft. 9.5 in.); Grant Edwards, seventh in 400M dash (58.87 seconds); third in long jump (18 ft. 2 in.); Cody Slykhuis, fourth in 110M hurdles (16.94 seconds), fifth in 300M hurdles (45.51 seconds), second in high jump (5 ft. 6 in.), second in triple jump (40 ft. 2 in.); Will Simonds, eighth in 110M hurdles (22.58 seconds); Jeff Boschee, fourth in 300M hurdles (45.50 seconds), first in high jump (6 ft. 2 in.), second in long jump (18 ft. 5.75 in.); Tyson Eddy, seventh in 300M hurdles (46.76 seconds); Dawson Baye-Larson, fifth in long jump (17 ft. 6.25 in.), third in triple jump (35 ft. 3.25 in.); and Peyton Uecker, fifth in triple jump (33 ft. 7 in.).

The girls’ relay teams who placed in the top eight were: 4x800M (Kali Hofer, Ellie Hofer, Addy Baruth, Jaycee Baruth), fourth, 12:36.10; 1,600M medley (K. Hofer, Jayda Hohn, Macey Beigh, J. Baruth), sixth, 5:16.0.

The boys’ relay team who placed high enough to be recognized was the 4x200M relay runners (Eddy, Edwards, Carter Hitchcock, Eli White), third, 1:42.57.

The Rearick/Warbird Relays on Friday, April 26, in Miller was canceled due to heavy rains. Weather pending, the Don Diede Relays took place on Tuesday, April 30. This Friday and Saturday (May 3-4) the Howard Wood Relays are scheduled in Sioux Falls, and the Blackhawks will travel to Huron to compete in the 281 Conference meet on Tuesday, May 7.
