It was going to take two upsets on their opponents’ home courts for the Blackhawks to earn a trip to the SoDak 16, but they did not back down from the challenge laid before them and brought home two Region Tournament victories to land their spot in the SoDak 16.

The first obstacle was traveling to Platte on Tuesday, Feb. 27 to take on Platte-Geddes. The SCW Blackhawks overpowered the Black Panthers by outscoring them 26-17 in the second half and brought home their first Region 5 Tournament win with a 48-43 victory.

Next up was a rematch with the Parkston Trojans, who the Blackhawks had lost to earlier in the season by an 11-point deficit. The SCW boys shocked the Trojans with a response for anything the Parkston boys threw at them, and the Blackhawks rallied in the second half to keep their lead and never look back, winning the game 75-66 and earning a trip to the SoDak 16.

Leading the way for the Blackhawks was Boschee with a stellar performance, scoring 33 points, including his 1,000th career point that was announced and celebrated at the end of the game.

The Blackhawks went into the SoDak 16 seeded as number 16, which brought them up against the number one seed, Sioux Falls Christian. They played Tuesday night, March 5, in Hartford. Results will be printed in next week’s issue of the Sanborn Weekly Journal.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, the SCW Lady Blackhawks played the Hanson Beaverettes in Alexandria for their first round of the Region 5A Tournament. They lost 18-62 to end their season for the 23-24 school year. Leaders for the Lady Blackhawks were Jaycee Baruth with nine points and six rebounds and Liz Boschee with five points. The SCW ladies finished their season with an 11-10 record, losing four senior players in Baruth, Kam and Kenna Ochsner and Kara Wormstadt. With a solid group moving up from the bench, next year’s season could be promising with even more wins in their record.

The SCW junior high boys team concluded their season on Friday with a 46-22 win over Wessington Springs. The junior high boys team finished the season with a 15-2 record only losing to Ethan and Howard. They lost to Howard in the first game of the season by three and avenged that loss in the championship game of the Wessington Springs tournament winning by 14.

Over the course of the season the junior high boys beat 11 different opponents. During the year, their full court press style of play not only gave opponents problems and was their key to success, but it seemed to delight the larger than usual junior high crowds throughout the season.

Coach Steele summarized the season by saying, “All year we pressed and trapped and defensively we were about as good as any team I’ve ever coached including the varsity state tournament teams I’ve coached.  This team bought into our defensive scheme and mantra that for 24 minutes nothing would be easy for our opponents.  I think our record shows the boys bought in and executed that mantra.  I’m extremely proud of them and our season.”
