On Friday, Dec. 29, the Lady Blackhawks played against the DeSmet Bulldogs in the Huron Classic. They worked hard and came from behind to win 48-45 in a close matchup against a solid DeSmet team.

The SCW Blackhawk boys competed in their Huron Classic on Saturday, Dec. 30 against the boys from Lower Brule.  It was a close, fast-paced game for the whole 32 minutes of playing time, but the Blackhawks just couldn’t get their last-minute shots to fall, and the game ended in Lower Brule’s favor 49-55.

The Lady Blackhawks improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Blackhawk boys fall to 3-2 with both losses in single-digit deficits. They started back after the Christmas Break with a doubleheader on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies and their first home game in the new year on Thursday, Jan. 4 against Howard in Forestburg. They then play Kimball/White Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 9 in Kimball.

Esports season kicked off on Dec. 11. We have seven athletes who compete in three different games. 

On Mondays, the team competes in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We have five athletes competing in this game. Following are the results after three weeks: Oscar Anderson, 3-0 (tied for first in the league out of 44 players); Briley Viktora, 2-1; Brendan Evans, 1-1; Garrett Aldrich, 1-2; and Chance Machado, 0-3.

On Thursdays, the team plays Rocket League. The team consists of Oscar Anderson, Brendan Evans, and Teagen Eggleston. They are currently 2-0, with wins over Rapid City Christian and Hot Springs, and are tied for first out of 28 teams.

Fridays, the team plays chess. In chess, Brendan Evans is 3-0, with wins over athletes from Dakota Valley and the Northwestern Area. Oscar Anderson is 2-0, with wins over Tea Area and Rapid City Central. There are 37 total chess players, with both Blackhawks sitting in the top 10 after three weeks.

The Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington Warhawks competed in the McCook Central Invitational Tournament on Friday, Dec. 22. Going up against wrestlers from 20 teams, the Warhawks landed in ninth place as a team, with six of the nine wrestlers placing in the top eight of their weight class.

The Warhawks get a little break until school resumes after the holidays. They take to the mats for their next competition on Friday, Jan. 5, in a traingular in Wolsey, starting at 5:30 p.m.
