The Sanborn County 4-H Special Foods Contest was held on Monday, July 8 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg with 13 participants.
During the contest, 4-Hers prepared a dish that is entered in one of the food groups, demonstrate food safety and sanitation, plan a menu, are tested on the nutritional knowledge of the dish and the meal and display a table setting for their menu.
The requirements for the complexity of the dish, menu and nutrition knowledge increase as the 4-H member moves from the level of Beginner to Junior to Senior.
The following 4-Hers received purple ribbons for their Special Foods dishes: Emily Ohlrogge, “Piña Colada Soy Smoothie”; Kaylee White, “Strawberry Banana Smoothie”; Elliott Ohlrogge, “Beef Noodle Bake”; Evan Ohlrogge, Hash Brown Pork Skillet”; Rex Schlicht, “Italian Beef Stir Fry”; Spens Schlicht, “BBQ Beef in a Cup”; Brooklyn Swenson, “Tater Tot Hot Dish”; Megan Linke, “Megan’s Triple Berry Smoothie”; Brady Larson, “Sunrise Surprise Smoothie”; Shaun Snedeker, “Oven Baked French Toast”; Nick Snedeker, “Wild Deer Chislic”; Nathan Linke, “Nathan’s Pizza Casserole”; Meghan Chada, “Taco Cups.”
Also participating in the Aurora County Special Foods Contest on Tuesday, July 2 was Erica Howard of Woonsocket. She received a purple ribbon on her “Tortilla Beef Casserole.”
